water questions
« on: October 24, 2005, 22:48:51 pm »
Hi all,

Dd is just over 11 months and I'm wondering when I can stop giving her boiled water to drink and just use tap water. (definitely safe where I live btw)

Also even though I will be switching to cow's milk in about a month... do I still need to boil the water for her formula? We don't sterilize anymore... she drinks all her formula from sippy's which are run through the dishwasher and her drinking water from a regular cup.

Thanks for your help!  :D

I always understood that you could stop boiling water from about 6 months on...that's when they'd get solids, so their stomachs should be ready for regular tap water too. I would definitely say it's ok to just go with tap water for everything! :D

Doh! So I've been boiling that stupid kettle for 5 extra months?

Thanks Erin I appreciate it. For some reason it's terribly intimidating to me to put tap water into her cup... never mind she eats dust bunnies, leaves, bugs, etc. on a daily basis...

i boiled water for alex for whole first year and at 8 mo am still doing it for olivia.

thanks erin! will confirm tomorrow at my early child centre when we check in but sounds right to me - i think you just get in the habit of doing these things.  (last time i was sterilizing all the bloody spoons for solids   this time i realized how unnecessary that was)

Sharon, all i can do is share what we are advised here in Australia - i know people do things differently everywhere so it is up to you...

having said that, we are advised to use boiled water and sterilize all bottles/teats until 12 months.  i guess there was a reason i was still doing it and not just habit - obviously i remembered being told this...and confirmed it yesterday.

i guess there is always a SMALL risk that something can contaminate the water, corrosion in your pipes, etc and although they eat dust bunnies and solids they would be less able to cope with ingesting somethign from the water... KWIM?

i'm just going to keep doing it and if i get stuck without water at hand i will use filtered tap water and not stress that 1 in 20 times it happens... :D

Straight tap water should be fine for drinking, but for formula it is better to use boiled water as the 'milk sugars' allow for rapid bug growth...that isn't likely to happen in straight water as they have nothing to "grow on".

As far as 11 months goes vs 12months it really isn't that different. but for a younger bub it could cause lots of problems.

the point of cut off points (which are a bit arbatory) is it gives a reasonable time for 99% safety.

As my friend who is an early childhood nurse once said... they have to go on the worst case senario, you can't really single out people & say "oh your personal hygiene seems poor, so you should sterelise to 12mo & then the next you'll be ok to stop at 6mo" so they give across the board recommendations, based on pretty much the lowest common denominator so to speak.

Um...wow.  I sterilized their bottles before their first use after being taken out of their packaging.  I never boiled their water.  Are there others in the U.S. who have done this like me?
