my son always got difficulty to bowel movement after he's feeding formula, I tried to gave him extra water everyday but it works sometimes and sometimes it doesn't. Is that normal for formula baby?

Sometimes formula can be a little constipating for babies. I used a little prune juice (bought in the baby aisle) for my kids. It worked wonders. Usually within a day they would poop.

Tracy recommends for formula fed babies to have an ounce of water about an hour after the daytome feeds. If he is really constipated try giving the water warm. I was reluctant to give prune juice because it is sweet, I did not want to itroduce Gigi to such drinks.

how old is your lo?  if you are concerned about introducing the sweetness of prune juice, you could dilute it with water.

Some formulas are worse than others at causing constipation so you could try another brand.

What you could do is put a few grains of demarar sugar into the formula.  Our midwife suggested this and I looked in horror.  However, it isn't enough to make the milk taste sweeter (I tried it!) and the sugar aids the digestion very gently - more so than prune juice or a prescription laxative.

My son was constipated with certain formulas-the ones with casein proteins-in the states that is similac/enfamil.  So, I switched to one with whey protein-Carnation Good Start and it made a huge difference.  Not sure what brands you have available, but you may at least be able to fine one where you live with whey vs. casein protein. Good luck!

Hi there! My son has not been able to poopoo on his own since week 2 and he is now 7 weeks old. He has terrible gas and has a very hard time burping. We have taking him into the doctor 4 times. So far we have tried switching to enfamil prosobee formula, 2 oz of straight apple juice, mylicon drops, perscription levsin drops, suppostitories, and Karo syrup and water (which is a controversial intervention). So far my son has only been able to go potty by himself about 7 times since week 2.

So far the best thing has been the suppositories. At first this seemed very invasive, but after hearing my son scream in pain it is worth it. The doctor says that they are harmless temporary means of alleviating the pain. Our next step will be to switch to a lacto free formula or try the carnation brand.

Gage's mom,

My daughter had terrible screaming constipation and bowel movements from about 4 weeks to 12 weeks of age.  She's now grown out of it thank god, but I can empathize with you a great deal.  I'm curious, does he let you know when he's trying to go? I found that when my daughter would start straining if I laid her on the changing table and undid her diaper I could pull her legs back and she was able to push a little bit harder.  Her bowel movements were extremely hard and dark green (she's on soy formula) and I could also help (not to be too descriptive here) pull them out and she'd be much happier for a day or two.  The only thing that finally totally solved this problem was introducing diluted juice.  1-2 ounces of juice with the equivalent of water added to it each day seemed to do the trick.  According to the pediatrician juice at an early age will not be harmful when used for medicinal purposes.  He also told us that the reason for her bowel problems was likely the high iron formulas.

Just some thoughts...

Tiffany

He tries to go on his own. You can see his body curl up and his face turns red. I try to move his legs around like a bicycle and up to his chest. You can tell it alleviates a little pain, but doesn't make things come out. We tried the water/juice solution and that didn't work, so we moved onto straight juice. That also didn't work. He doesn't sleep well either (an understatement). I think as soon as we get his tummy issues under control (probably when he no longer drinks formula) things will get better. I got to just keep thinking positive. It is funny, I have waited all of my life to have children, making sure everything was a right as it can be (finish college, married, home ownership etc.,), and I am absolutely miserable. However, I don't love him any less.
