Changing to solids first then formula
« on: October 26, 2005, 01:28:30 am »
My DD is now 10.5 months and since 10 months I changed to giving her solid food first and then offering formula as advised by my child health nurse. Only problem is, she's never been a big eater and if I feed her solids first, she only drinks about 3 ounces of formula. The last three nights, she refused formula (after eating only 3 baked beans one night) and woke in the night hungry which she hasn't done since I put her on formula at 9 months. And sometimes, she won't eat any solids during the day but will drink her formula no problem. Is she a bit young to be changing her diet to mainly solids and supplementing with formula? Or is this normal pre-walker behaviour?

My T is 6 months old and has been slowly weaning since 5 months. he is breast fed. I give him his milk feeds first thing in the morning in between his 3 solid meals and at bed time & dream feed. But like you he sometimes doesn't take much milk and then wakes up several times a night hungry. Even between bedtime feed and dream feed. Should I bulk up his fruit & veg? what with? This week he had some cheese on the veg and tried chicken casserole. Is this a common problem?

I'm starting to realise (it's taken me a while!) that it's not worth worrying about this stuff because one week they are scoffing their faces on anything and the next week all they will eat is yoghurt. From what I have read, this goes on well into the early teenage years, like when your daughter comes home and announces she will is now vegetarian and that you need to adjust your cooking to accommodate her moral choice (until further notice ).

So here I sit, eating the lovely sweet potato and provoletta fritatta (made with the eggs from nonna and nonno's chooks) that was meant for dd, and might I say, it's delicious! Thanks darlin'! It'll keep for tomorrow too! I won't be finishing her bottle of formula though! I don't blame her for not wanting that!

Yes, welcome to the crazy world of the toddler! It only gets crazier! :D

Jannyg - what does your DS's feeding schedule look like? 6 mo is too early to shift the focus from breast/bottle to solids, so you may need to tweak his feeding schedule a bit so he'll be hungrier for breastmilk or formula. Do you have a rough estimate of how much breastmilk and formula he drinks on an average day?

Thanks for your help. However our feeding issues seem to have sorted themselves out as T is now sleeping through the night again and can be settled without food if he does wake in the evening. Giving him his dinner before his last nap seems to make the difference. I have also reintroduced Gaviscon. So not sure if reflux was the problem or just coincidence. However the day time naps have changed dramatically; from 1 3/4 hrs first nap to 30 mins! He is definitely not hungry when he wakes up and seems very happy. He does not want to be put back to sleep. Of course this may all be developmental as he is desperately trying to crawl (creeping) and may even be trying to tell me that he only needs 2 day time naps not three but he is cutting the wrong one short! The clocks going back aren't  helping either. Not sure what to do. Will try the sleep forum.
