Training in cot or wait for big boy bed ?
« on: October 26, 2005, 03:40:39 am »
As most of you know Khyan has had lots of sleeping/illness issues

Well this week he had some allergy testing and we found out that he has severe allergies to dust mites and cats - which ofcourse we have both  :?

We are in the middle of doing the hugest spring clean, to rid the house of cat hair and dust mites with the hope that his horrible permanent green runny nose will finally end and that it may help with his constant ear infections, sinusitis, asthma and cough.

Anyway once this is in action and Khyan is feeling better I am going to jump onto sleep training as I want alittle sleep before the next baby comes  however Khyan in the last couple of days has started trying to climb out of his cot, by this I mean when I go to him he has his tummy resting on the top bar and his feet kicking at the bars trying to get some leverage  If he gets good grip he more than likely will push himself over the bars and will land on his head

I was hoping to get him into a big boy bed before the baby comes in June but only a couple of months before, now I'm confused  :?

I think that he only does it in the mornings and after naps while waiting for me to come and get him but I don't know maybe he does it at other times too

My question is:

Do you think it's just a new novelty that he will soon get sick of and stop ? or should I be considering trying a big boy bed ? and if we do need to consider the big bed - should I quickly do sleep training in the cot to prepare for the big bed or just take the plunge and put him straight into the bed and train there ?

TIA
Michaela

That's a tough one.
Jessica went into a big girls' bed when she was a little over 2..Emily will be going into one when she's 2 as well.
I personally would start the sleep training in the cot so that when he does go into the big boys'bed he will know what he's doing and hopefully sleep.

On the other hand, plenty of other children are quite happy in big beds from an early age.

At least while he's ill and you're getting rid of those dust mites he can't keep getting out of bed and coming into your room in the middle of the night, which he may do if he's in a bed.

On the other, other hand,do you need to get a new cot mattress? Is Khyan's mattress natural latex or treated for dustmites,or will you have to get a new one anyway? If you do then it may be more economical to go with the new bed.

Would like to see other views as well.

I went through this with my now 4-yr-old when he was close to 2. We bought a crib tent that you attach over the crib, and it has a zipper to close up when you're putting them down. Eventually, of course, he figured out how to unzip (from the inside - zipper backwards!) the crib tent, so then we had to deal with that, but it still really helped us!

I still regret moving my son to a big bed at 2 1/2 yrs, because we then went through about 6 months of him getting out of bed at naps and bed time (up to 90 times in 1 night - I counted!!!) So... I personally will not move my dd from the crib til absolutely necessary! I don't think the big bed solves problems, it just introduces new ones. I actually think it's better to move to a big bed when the child is older and better understands consequences (i.e. you stay in bed, you get a treat in the morning.)

With Khyan, you've had so many challenges, you probably want to minimize distractions and changes! Good luck.
