21 month old not napping! Help!
« on: October 26, 2005, 22:58:35 pm »
Okay,
I am trying to keep my cool.  Since my DD turned 1, she has been taking one nap.  I tried to keep two going - but I lost that battle.  Anyway, she had been doing pretty well with them.  Sometimes taking up to 3 hour naps.

For the last month, I am lucky if I get 2 naps a week.  When she doesn't go to sleep for her nap, she jumps in her crib and makes a complete racket.

I have been putting her down the same way that I always have.  I usually put a book in the crib with her so that she can read.

When she doesn't take a nap, she is a nightmare in the late afternoon (from about 4 on).

What can I do?

Ladies, I am dying here!  Is she giving up her naps?  Do you think that it is caused by teething?  Do you think that it is temporary?

Should I keep putting her down in her crib and just let her stay for an hour?

Have you tried even putting her down a bit later for her nap?

I'm thinking that it is just a phase she is going through, with either the teething or something developmental going on.  What happens when you put her down?  Is she crying or just playing in her crib the whole time she is in there?

Post back and we'll try to help!

On a side note, all my family lives in N.H.!

Well, if it makes you feel any better, we've been going through this since Tyler was 20 mo or so (he's 22 mo now, so maybe it's been even longer...sheesh, I don't know!). He takes his nap about 75% of the time now, and when he doesn't, he happily plays in his crib or practices his wrestling moves on his teddy bear. Those are early to bed days! It doesn't matter what time of day I put him down, if he doesn't feel like napping, it just doesn't happen.

I think (HOPE) it's a phase, because I'm not ready to lose that nap yet! I don't think it's teething here, he hasn't been chewing or telling me his mouth hurts. I just try to go with the flow as best I can!

I type this as my 22-month-old is in her room banging on her door...

I'm going to start putting her down and pulling the door shut.  (She's in a bed though.)  Then sitting in the hallway and wait for the sounds that she's playing and not taking a nap, and going in and telling her it's naptime.  Repeat process until she tires herself out, and hope it works.

So glad that I am not the only one dealing with this.

When I put her down, she usually just plays.  Although sometimes she will call out to me.

Today, she played for about 20 minutes then slept for over an hour!!!  I didn't do anything different.

Maybe this no nap thing is just a phase.  I am noticing that her language is growing leaps and bounds right now.   Perhaps she is more interested in what she is learning than sleeping.

I am not sure if it would help putting her down later.  Right now I put her down around 1.  I will try a bit later tomorrow - although with the time change, it is a bit confusing.  I will let you know.

Thank you, thank you & thank you for the replies!!!
