11-Week Old With Lovey - OK?
« on: October 28, 2005, 00:51:13 am »
Is it OK that my 11-week old DD sleeps with a lovey (burp cloth)? She doesn't have a pacifier but has become very attached to holding a burp cloth while she tries to sleep and sometimes will suck her hands too. It seems to work great!

Should I be worried that she might smother herself with the cloth if she holds it and goes to suck her hands in the night? I wouldn't think so since it is so thin but just want to know so I can be safe.

She is a side sleeper and in a positioner - so she can't roll.

Please let me know. Thanks.

I think it's great. dd is almost 4 1/2 months old and adores her lovey. Hers is  a boyd's bear blanket. Hard to explain but my point is that the blanket part covers her face sometimes and she'll pull it away with her unswaddled hand. But mostly she likes it around/by/ or on her face.

I'd definitely keep up with it. Especially if it helps soothe her to sleep.

hI Marisa Mom  :D
I agree with kayna...they are great.  Especially when used for only nap/bedtimes, it definitely helps let them know that it's time to sleep  :D

also...I don't think you have to worry about it smothering her  :D

Great guys, thanks! I really think it works great and she loves the way it feels. And helps us avoid pacifier, which I'd really prefer not to use. She is not swaddled so she can and does find her hands too. And yes, we ony use it for naptimes and bedtime (even naps in stroller).

Is it confusing to her though that it's a burp cloth - so therefore involved in eating too? Should I use different material burp cloths for eating and only these for sleeping? The ones she likes to sleep with are the Durdee cloths (can be diapers, bur cloths, etc).

Thanks for alleviating my worries.

I don't think it would be confusing.....there is a little girl at daycare (16mos?) that uses one as her lovey and all seems to be well.

Another  thing I use the lovey for is for when they are getting vaccinations or other times when something is really new/scary/etc.  it's great security for them.  :D

My aunt and uncle used burp clothes for both their childrens lovey's. They never had any problems.

And I second Noelle's advice on bringing it to the dr's. DD had to have blood drawn the other day and didn't even cry. I had her lovey up by her face distracting her the whole time.

How do you introduce a lovey, because I'd love my DD to have a lovey and get rid of the  dummy

Corrina..
With each of my kiddos I picked out what i wanted them to use as a lovey and put it in the crib with them.  That and only their blankets.  Then when it was time to sleep I would put it in their hands.  At first they wanted nothing to do with it, but eventually it was part of the "routine" thus part of him/her.  HTH  :D

Corrina - Marisa sort of attached herself to the burp cloths - she would always pull it off my shoulder after a burp and loved to hold it while eating, so...

My DD always eats her clothes, her bibs, anything which she can get into her mouth,  I trying to find something that I can put my scent onto, to get herself to sleep with, I don't what though.

My ds's lovey is a stuffed duck (try to avoid eyes, parts that can get pulled off) and he sucks on the wings (still does at age 3, eek!).  Maybe something like that?  Keep in mind though, whatever you choose....you'll probably want to get 2-3 of them (we have 6 ducks for ds and 4 loveys for dd) so you can wash them, in case you lose them, etc.  :D

I just started putting dd's lovey in her crib exactly one month ago and now I doubt she could fall asleep without it. It works like a charm. She sucks on it and rubs her face all over it..........whatever works right?

My DP, got her a little cute rabbit, (only minature), when she was born,
the shop still sells them, so maybe I will give her that and buy some more.
