What age does the early a.m. crib-partying stop??
« on: October 28, 2005, 15:05:34 pm »
My 6 month old has been waking for the past month or so every night between 3 and 4 a.m.

She wants to stay up and play, practice using her voice, scooching around the crib, banging her legs etc...for at least an hour, sometimes two. She will then go back to sleep to wake at her usual 6:30-7 am.

Is this a stage thing?? Will it pass??  Please, someone, say YES!!

It stopped for us when we put a blackout drapes.

It's back now once in a while, even with the drapes. You just learn to sleep through it and be thankful that she is not crying and needing you in the room. :)

For us it lasted about 3-4 weeks where the early a.m. party time happened every few days (probably half the time or a little more). When our little one was up she was up and there was no going back to sleep so often one of us would have to either be half asleep and listen for her crying or shuffling around.....or we'd just try to rest until she cried out and needed her legs reswaddled or her pacifier back. She'd be awake about 45 minutes and then back to sleep!

I'm not sure why but I am thankful it passed. Now she wakes at that same time and if you give her a pacifier she's asleep again fast (prop removal time!).

best wishes.

Michelle - I'm right there with you!!!  With help from BW, we have dropped that habitual 4am feed - but a month later, the wakings continue.  Ian is not unhappy per se, he is loud, cooing, rolling about, making as much noise as possible.  I can hear him 2 doors down with no baby monitor on.  Occasionally he gets frustrated and starts to cry - or scream!

The room is pitch dark, so that doesn't seem to matter.  What I want to know is, is there any way to STOP it of do they have to just work it out?  I definitely don't rush in, but  DS1 is almost always awakened by this, and sometimes we all start the day now at 5:30-6am becuase it goes on so long.  Then the schedule for the whole day is completely screwed up.

Keep me posted if you find something that works!

Oh so pleased to hear that it isn't just us!  The problem we have is that DD still sleeps in our room, and so there's no rest for any of us.  I think it might be time for her to move into her own room, although I suspect that won't make much difference as I'm sure we'll still hear her.

She was up at 3.30am and it was 5am before she started crying - and then it wasn't really a proper cry - when I tried a bit of PU/PD she fought against me - clearly just trying to settle herself and didn't need me 'helping'.

I'm just wondering whether she's going to sleep too early (normally by 7pm) because she always has really short naps as well, which might suggest she doesn't need so much sleep overall.

I love the idea of structure and routine in the day, but does anyone really manage it for more than a week at a time before something changes and everything goes out of sync?!

Rachel's Mum - it is actually a really common phase at 4 months so your lo will probably stop it soon enough - but i woudl definitely move her out if you have a room for her as it took a week of it for me to agree to turn down our monitor (dd is at opposite end of the house) so i woudl only hear if it wasa cry (never was) instead of the playing.  her longest strtch was 3:30/4 - 6am. it stopped for us after 2 weeks.

i have not heard too many people mention another phase at 5-6 months so have no real advise for the other posters unless it is just later for some(sorry) but 4 mo is definitely the typical age for this phase and usually passes just as it started...

Alberta - Any updates?  We are coming up on 2, yes, 2 months of this - EVERY MORNING!!!  Ian is still waking around 4am and is up 60-90 minutes cooing and babbling and rolling around as loudly as possible.

Our poor 2 year old is often wakened by this and guess what time our day starts then? :x

I have tried everything!  Go in early, go in late, ignore it all together, offer a bottle, rock, pat, shhh!  Please, let me sleep!!!!!!

Check in with me when you get a chance!  Or anyone else who can offer a light at the end of a tunnel!

Kelli - you poor thing!! Having to cope with the early morning wake up call and then having your older one wake up too!!     That sucks!
My older one (he's 9) can sleep through anything, thank goodness!!

I still have not found a solution to this problem! Last night it was 1:55 am awake until 3:20 am!! Grrrrrrrrrrr
When DH is having his turn of getting up with Molly he usually sleeps right through it!! I have a hard time sleeping as it is, due to PPD, so once she wakes up, that's it...I am wide awake. Once she falls back asleep, it usually takes me another hour to get off to sleep myself.
I think I am averaging about 4 hours of sleep a night, the first 2 being when I go to bed at 9 pm until 11 pm when DH goes to bed. After that, Molly seems to wake every hour (just needs resettling or pacifier) until the 2 hour party time.
I'm at my wits end on this one. I'll  keep watching this post in case you come up with a solution too!

Thanks!  Right there with you!  Isn't it scary how you can survive and function so well on 4 hours!  HA!  My DH hasn't a CLUE what it is like, he sleeps thru all of this for the most part!

Is Molly rolling, crawling, all that?  I am not thinking it is milestone related since our started at about 3 1/2 months.

GOTTA HAVE IT!  (as my 2 year old would say!)

No, but we had a really rough start  - lots of crying/colic/gas pain etc. so my hubby bought him a onesie saying "My Mamma drinks because I cry" from babywit.com (can I say that?)  Totally hilarious!

Let's hope this partying stops before college, eh?

I hate to say it but I STILL have this issue with my 18 month old.  I did have this issue when she was a baby and now it's back in full force.  She's up around 2 or 3 for anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours!!!!!!!!!!  I am exhausted :(
