Nursing frequency

My dd has just turned 4 months and for the past 2 weeks or so eats between 4 and 7 times per day.  She has been sleeping through the night also (between 9 and 12 hours straight).  I feed her when she seems hungry and I follow the principles of EASY, in that she eats, plays, sleeps, but I don't focus too much on the clock.  Sometimes she goes 4 - 4.5 hours between daytime feeds, other times, 2 hours (usually in the early evening).  She is quite a small baby, weighed 6 lbs, 9 oz when she was born and at her 3 month check-up weighed 9 lbs, 8 oz.  She is quite long 23" at 3 month check-up and is very active.  She seems to have the required amount of wet diapers and usually 1 poopy diaper/day.  She is generally quite a happy baby, but everyone always comments on her petite size.  I find nursing frustrating because I'm not sure how much she is getting.  Is four bf sessions in a day not enough?  In the early months, she let us know when she was hungry and even now, is very vocal about her needs.  I just want to make sure she is getting enough milk.  Some friends have told me to wake her in the night, but I wouldn't want someone waking me in the middle of the night to feed me, so why would my daughter?  I assume if she's hungry, she will cry to let me know.  We have her four month checkup next week, so I guess I will see what she weighs then.  In the meantime, any advice on frequency of feeds would be most appreciated.  Thanks!  :?:  :?:

Hello.  First, be proud of your self for breastfeeding your baby.  Even though it is supposed to be a natural thing it can hard to do.   I would tend to think that at your lo age, she should be getting what she needs.  Especially if she is gaining weight.  Not all babies gain weight the same.  I definitley would not wake her at night to feed, you are right she will let you know when she is hungry.  However, if you are concerened and want to add in another feed you could try cluster feeding before bed.  So, if her last usual feed is at 8 pm then try to offer her a snack so to speak at 6 pm.  And remember, breastfeeding is measured by output, not intake.  So as long as she is having lots of wet diapers and at least 1 poopy diaper a day she should be getting what she needs.  When we were first getting started with bfeeding I had the same hard time believing lindsey was getting enough because I could not see or measure what was going in to her.  But you have to go by what comes out with bfeeding and of course by weight gain.  In my breastfeeding book it says that babies up to 4 months old should gain about an ounce a day. I think you really have to take a look at the baby though, because not all babies gain weight at the same rate.  It really sounds to me like she is doing fine and some babies are just smaller.  As long as you feed on demand and don't try to adhere to a strict feeding schedule I am sure things will be fine.

Just wanted to recommend http://www.kellymom.com for some great info about breastfeeding and how to know if your baby is getting enough milk.   Also, it sounds like your lo is already clusterfeeding in the evenings some which is very common.  The are "tanking up" like Tracy says for the night.

I'd wait to see what her weight is at her 4 month visit before worrying!  It sounds like you're great at reading her cues. At 4 months, 4 feeds a day might not be enough for all babies, but some manage fine on it.  Also, if she eats more on other days, then it likely balances out.  If she's healthy, happy, active and sleeping well, then as long as the weight gain is ok, I wouldn't change a thing! :D

Thank you both for your replies.  I will wait and see what her weight is on Wednesday and let you know.

For the bottle, did you check the announcement at the top of the forum for ideas?

As for the eating frequently - sounds like it could be a growth spurt - how long has it been going on?

ABOUT THE EATING FRECUENCY HE USE TO DO IT SINCE HE BORN AND I DONT KNOW WHAT TO DO I AM TRYING TO NURSE HIM EVERY THREE HOURS SOME TIMES IT WORKS BUT SOME TIMES HE IS HUNGRY EARLIER.
   ANY IDEAS?

Well, Jordan weighed in at a whopping 10 lbs today.  My doctor and public health nurse assure me that she is perfectly healthy and just on the petite side in her size.  She has been eating 5 or 6 times each day for the past few days and her mood is good, diaper output seems on par.  Thank you all for your input.
As for your ds, Gabby, I'm not sure what to say about 5.5 month old, since my dd isn't there yet.  All I can say is, if he is hungry, feed him and you may want to try some solids.

Gabby - many bf babies go only 2.5-3 hrs between feeds. It sounds like he can go a bit longer at night...?  If he's gaining weight well, is sleeping ok and is healthy and happy, I'd try to go with the flow as much as possible. Aim for some type of flexible routine! :)
