I went all out
« on: October 31, 2005, 03:40:25 am »
I decided today that I was going to try making baby food.  So, I went all out.  Went to Whole foods (our local health food store) and bought a butternut squash, a small pumpkin and two sweet potatoes.  Now let me say that I have never cooked any of these foods for myself in my life.  I was following the guidelines from the Super Baby Food book.  Came home and baked the sweet potatoes in the microwave.  While doing that, I baked the pumpkin and the squash.  I have a small food processor that I got from a baby website and when the SP were done, I scooped em out and into the processor with some water.  They pureed great.  Then I put them in these cool little food cubes that can be frozen.  I did the same with the squash and pumpkin when they were done.  I have to say it was a big process.  Lots of dish washing and orange goo everywhere.  But I feel great knowing that I don't have to do it again for a while, and that I made my baby some great food.  Of course she just started eating solids, LOL, and is only at rice cereal and bananas.  But a girl can get a head start right?

Definately!!! This is the right way to do it!!

If you need the cube trays again before she's eaten all the food, pop them out and store them in freezer plastic bags instead.

Soon you'll have so much for her in there, there won't be any room for your food!!!

SO true, my freezer is full of bags with frozen baby food, y husband has even had to give up his beloved ice cream 'collection' as we no longer have any space for it. Enjoy the cooking, hope the eating plan helps.

It's definitely worth making your own vegies for your baby. I've tasted the jars of baby food you get in the shops and I don't blame my dd for not liking them - they are foul! I do buy the pureed fruit though, because it tastes fine. I used to make fruit purees myself too but found I needed a lot of fruit to make a little puree.

I also make chicken stock for my dd which I freeze for use in baby soups and risottos. I ask for chicken leg bones from the local chicken monger for 20c a kilo and boil them up with some carrot, celery, onion, parsley and bay leaf. When it's done I strain it into a jug, put it in the fridge for a while to cool, skim off the solidified fat and pour the stock into ice cube trays ready to freeze. I used to puree the vegies from the stock and freeze that too but now I leave them as chunks and freeze them in some of the stock.

I never thought about the freezer bags idea!  I was thinking I would have to buy more freezer cubes.  But it's much cheaper to buy the bags instead.

As for cooking, I am not much of a cook.  I have a feeling my talent for baking things and then grinding them up may be be the limit.  I've never been too good with meats or soups.  I swore once I got married and had children that I would take a cooking class.  My Grandmother swears that as long as you can read a recipe you can cook.  I don't agree, I'm always worrying if I have cooked my meats enough, especially chicken.  I don't have that "natural" instinct to know when stuff is done.

Even the squash last night, I had no idea if it was done or not.  The book on baby food said pierce it with a fork and if it glides in, it's done.  So, that's what I did.

I also don't intend to do fruit purees, because they are pretty good straight from the jar.  I will mash my own bananas, which she loves, and avocados.  I was thinking though, that when it comes time for berries, like blueberries, I might try a puree or two.

Congratulations on making your baby food! I haven't started solids quite yet; but am hoping to make some of my own too. I'm an awful cook, so reading your post helped boost my confidence that it's possible.

I was wondering; where did you get your cubes to freeze the food in? I've been looking for something like that.

Good luck-I'll probably be back asking for advice soon. :)

I got the cubes and the baby food processor at One Step Ahead. com
I love that place.  I have to stop myself now from ordering too much.  The cubes are great.  Once the food is frozen overnight, then you can pop them out and put them in freezer bags.  Good luck!

LOL....thats how my freezer is. And I'm addicted. I keep making her more. Kiddos NEVER gonna eat it all by expiration. but at 4 cents an ounce it beats buying food anyway...plus I KNOW whats in it!  :D

I too am following Super Baby Food loosely, and have made Taylor a ton of the winter squash.  It feels wonderful doesn't it?  I think she may be getting bored with it though, so thinking of adding some new foods soon.

Good luck!

Have you done the Super Porridge yet?  I did it yesterday, and DD seemed OK with it.  Of course I mixed it with pears, so who wouldn't eat it right?  LOL.
