OK, I swore I would start Rachel on rice cereal first, then sweet potatoes then something else.  Well, don't ask me why (probably sleep deprivation), I gave Rachel a taste of mashed bananas last night.  Also, DH bought a ton, so I need to do something with them.  Anyway, she loved them.  But now I'm worried about constipation.  She's eating a little rice cereal a day, which I know can cause constipation, and now bananas.  Argh, what was I thinking???  So I'm wondering if they sell pureed prunes for baby food..I have yet to buy any baby food yet so I don't know.  Or how do you give your baby prunes?

Yes, Gerber makes prunes.  My ds never needed them.  Nothing seems to mess up his system.  My dd, however, ate a lot of prunes.  One bite of cereal, then one bite of prunes--or I mixed them together.  Wait and see how Rachel is doing.  She may do just fine.  Not all babies have issues with constipation.  Good luck--and have fun with solids--it's a new adventure!   :D

OK thanks.  So should I continue with the bananas?  I was thinking of just not giving her anymore just in case.  She pooped her usual today, but that's after only one evening of bananas.  She was definitely not amused by her cereal this morning though.  She gave me this look like, where are those other yummy things...

definitely continue if she likes them and just watch and see if she starts having pain when she poops.  Olivia not only does not like the taste of bananas but they and cereal constipate her so always get offered with prunes if possible, but alex could eat everything and still happily pooped 3-4 times a day (and still does) every single kid reacts differently so it is trial and error.

if you want pureed prunes it is easy enough to buy dried prunes in a resealable tub and just simmer a couple of them for a few minutes and puree them up - that way you don't have to buy a whole jar of just prunes if all you need is a small spoonful to counteract the bananas.

Another option would be prune juice. I used to mix about a tablespoon into dd's rice cereal which made it really yummy, especially if you put in a bit of apple or pear puree too!

Thanks, I actually have prune juice so I might try that if there's a problem.  Unfortunately she seems to be developing a rash of some kind, around her mouth and on her body.  Looks like baby acne and doesn't seem to bother her.  I hope it's not an allergy.

Some kids have that kind of reaction to bananas so I would eliminate them for a few days, and when the rash clears up, try them again under controlled circumstances.

As for the prunes, I agree with Debra.  I puree them for dd on a regular basis as she is prone to constipation.

So glad to have found this thread. I gave dd banana 3 days ago. THis was at great personal cost as just the smell of it makes me want to puke!  she loved it and ate lots on the second day and I just let her as there seemed no bad reaction!!!!!! Silly me  She has been constipated today, really red and pushing with nothing to show for it (sorry for TMI).

Prunes sound like a great idea. Are they okay for a 6 month old? Not seen them in any weaning books as a suggested food. She has had quite a few different fruits and veg so far.

Also, are bananas known for causing constipation? Not heard of this before. Although it's not the usual dinner party conversation

TIA

Prunes are fine for a six month old, I give them to mine at least three times a week; prevention is better than cure. SImmer for about five minutes and then mush up; fantastic mixed with apple or pear.

Prunes were dd's first fruit.  And bananas are known to cause constipation.  I usually give dd bananas and prunes in the same sitting.

Just thought I'd let you know what we do. Ds is very prone to constipation, so, every morning after his 1st bottle, he has his porridge into which is mixed half an ice cube portion of pureed prunes (just buy a packet of dried prunes, simmer for 5-6 mins, then use a hand blender to mush them up - they freeze fine). This has sorted the constipation problem (but his poos are nearly black   :P ). I agree that prevention is better than cure - he hasn't been constipated since we started doing that, and he's eating allsorts now!

Once he was really bunged up, so I gave him an ice cube portion on their own    . OMG, it looked like an explosion in a silage works  :P  :P . Worked though!
Caroline :)

Thanks Charlie's mum,
I tried prune and pear mixed yesterday and it tasted great and Amber loved it, so prunes are definately on the menu.
