overcoming the 45 minutes mark - how long?
« on: November 01, 2005, 12:54:52 pm »
Hi,

I am currently transitioning DD(3.5 months) to an EASY routine and she is eating every 3 to 4 hours (differes every time). Also started to feed only once/twice during the night (compared to every two hours).

Her naps are still 45 min max. Sometimes I manage to extend the second morning nap to 1.5 hours but she always wakes up after 45 mins. I tried enetering the room earlier and putting my hand over her chest, or sh/p when she starts moving around, or just letting her settle on her own... She still wakes up! It takes about 10-35mins of sh/p and sometimes she nods off again...

My quiestion is how long until she starts to sleep for longer herself? I've only been doing it for about a week, but don't really notice any improvement, to be honest.

Breast or bottle fed?

Pacifier?

Do you use white noise?

Darken her room?

Swaddle?

Hi Diego's mama,

DD is exclusively BF, justa managed to get her onto 3-3:30 EASY (from 2 hourly). She uses pacifier for getting asleep but often spits it out jsut before falling asleep. No white noise. Don't darken the room, just pull the curtains. I do swaddle her always, she can't sleep otherwise... trying to get one arm out now and again but she can't settle.

She usually wakes up after 40 mins and when I resettle her she goes on and sleeps for 1-1:30 hours more! On avarage it takes abotu 10-15 mins of sh/p to get her to sleep again.

Any ideas?

My DD is 19 weeks old, and I have been seeing her through the 45 mark since about 8 wks old.  The past couple of weeks I have just been going in to put her dummy in and walking out again.  When she sleeps through the 45 min mark, I go in just to make sure she is still breathing!!!  This has been getting easier and easier over the past few weeks now. So hopefully she is getting used to napping now without me going in her room.

Ok, last two days she would wake up (even if I m there and start sh/p or keep my arm on her chest), smile for few minutes, then moan for few more, scream for about 10 mins and then settles and goes back to sleep... it took about 30 mins each time (once I gave up after an hour!)

How long does it take? Should I just let her have short naps instead?

Next week she will be 4mos - i would transtion her to 4hr EASY then.  It was on 4hr EASY that i had the best success when fighting the short naps at this age.

OMG, she actually slep thru this morning nap. She sturred slightly at the 45 mins mark, I went in and popped in the dummy, her arms were out of the swaddle but I left them out as she seemed happy... and 1.5 hours later she is still asleep!! I just can't believe it! :D  :D

Thanks, Meg'smom! Unfortuantelly it was a once-off, she still wakes up after 45 mins... At least I know she can do it!

On the positive side she seems to be transitioning on her own to 4 hour EASY (meaning - sleeping past her feeding time and eating every 4 hours, instead of 3.5)
