Offering solids between breastfeeding?
« on: November 02, 2005, 07:51:31 am »
I read that solid foods may interfere with absorption of valuable breast milk iron if both solids and breast milk are fed at the same time.
Does anybody know anything about this?

Should I feed solids in between breast-feeding, before, of after?

Offering solids between breastfeeding?

Most of what I've read indicates that only dairy foods or those high in calcium may interfere with the absorption of iron in any food, including breastmilk. Foods or liquids that are high in vitamin C actually help the body better absorb iron. As for the timing of breastfeeding and solids, that's purely up to you and your LO. I always liked to offer solids about 1 hr after nursing/bottle so that Tyler could fill up on the good stuff but still have a bit of an appetite for solids, but it's whatever works best for you!
