undigested food in poop
« on: November 02, 2005, 15:52:39 pm »
Please help, I'm a first-time mom so I don't know if this is normal...
Noah is 11 months old, started eating finger foods over the last month. I've been finding large chunks of undigested fruits and veggies in his poop for about a week now - pieces of carrot, peaches, peas, sweet potato. I don't remember seeing them before now. Almost every fruit or vegetable I give him seems to go right through without breaking down. Only potato and cauliflower seem to break down.
He does chew his food (at least makes lots of chewing motions). All other food seems to digest fine (like cheerios, pasta and cheese).
Also he's been pooping 4-6 times a day for the past week (a problem since we're trying to cure a yeast diaper rash).
Is this normal? Do I call the doctor?
Thanks
Deb

I asked the same question in the 'eating for toddlers' forum and got some good replies. Check out the thread 'sweetcorn - is it just passing through?' I'll bump it for you.

I'd hate to be one of those mums doing a scare tactic unnecessarily, but my son's just been diagnosed with celiac disease with one of the main symptoms being undigested food.  It's a gluten intolerance (mostly from wheat products) which for us was triggered by a virus - it took me about 4mths to realise that it wasn't a normal thing.  He also is a 4-6 day pooper (the poops are pale in colour to which is another sign) which means the food isn't being absorbed by the body.  It's not life threatening, but keep an eye on it and if it hasn't improved in a week or so I'd probably take him to the doctor.  I hope this isn't the case for you, but I really wanted to let you know of this possibility, the sooner it's picked up the better.

Oh and I've just checked out the other thread, I initially passed it off as my toddler eating heaps and heaps of fruit and vege, but in his case that wasn't the problem.

Thanks to both - I am keeping a close eye on it (although I don't enjoy examining poop several times a day...) and I will check out the topic in the toddler section.
