how to FINALLY move 9.5 month old out of our room?
« on: November 03, 2005, 14:29:04 pm »
Just wondering what the best way is to move our 9.5 month old dd out of our bedroom and into her own room?  She has been sleeping in her crib next to our bed from the start.

She is generally a good sleeper, with the exception of the past 2 months.  There have been many nights of broken sleep due to teething and practicing her crawling & standing in the night!

When i put her to bed, she usually stands up right away.  I let her do that for a few minutes, then lay her down, give her the teddy bear (just introduced that a couple of weeks ago) and paci, then put my hand on her chest and she goes to sleep (and i tiptoe out of the room).  I would like to be able to put her down and leave the room, but i didn't know if that was a good idea to start doing that at the same time as we move her into her own room; i think she might feel abandoned.

What is the best way to make the transition?  any advice would be greatly appreciated.

one suggestion i've seen is to go ahead and put her & her crib right into her room.  since she's already used to sleeping in the crib that's not a new thing for her.

to help her adjust to sleeping by herself, you can put a blow-up mattress on the floor in her room and sleep on that.  every few days, move the mattress a little farther away from her crib until it's no longer in the room.

just an idea anyhow!

Hi,

I did what Jamie suggested. I used a futon mattress on ds' floor and then slowly moved away or spent less time laying beside him. Eventually, he would settle without me being there and sleeps great now. It was well worth it. We made the transition very slowly and gently. Good luck!

Good suggestions so far.  I wonder if it would work just as well for you to put her crib in her bedroom and then keep putting her to bed like you've always done.  Then, when you know she's comfortable in her room you can work on the falling asleep part.

thanks to all for your support & suggestions!  I think i'll try moving the crib into her room and keeping everything else the same as it is... maybe she won't notice (HA!! )  Then, when she is settled in, i will try to make some other changes.  It's nice to know that i'm not the first person to try this!!!
