Ear piercing screaming while winding down

My 5.5month ds two days ago started sreaming during his winding down process. As I was having trouble getting him to sleep without crying, I figured out that I was not starting the 4 'S' early enough. So yesterday I started it earlier, and he went in and out of calming to screaming modes. However, the scream is this ear piercing scream which he'll do for about 20 seconds on and off and then calm right down and start cooing and drifting off to sleep. Then he'll start right up again. He does this about 3 times and only does it at nap/bed time. Does anyone have any ideas???

I posted a similar thing today, Jake does scream, but after falling asleep about an hour later. But it is a real "help me now"ear piercing noise, but only lasts for 30 secs and he's usually fast asleep after.
he makes a real row when winding down, if you didn't know him you'd think he was playing!
I suppose we are lucky in a way, although its strange, at least they do have the skills to fall asleep alone!
