Need to expand her diet
« on: November 05, 2005, 21:09:07 pm »
Allright....I admit it...my 3 yo DD is a mac'n'cheese kiddo. Her diet- quesadillas (cheese only), cereal, bananas, grapes, applesauce, mac'n'cheese, yogurt....NO veggies and NO meat. I tried to take the relaxed route...keep offering and offereing and offering..no such luck. I know she not eating as healthy as other toddles (BTW...most of the time she can't be bothered to eat) but at a lost of what to do next. HELP!!

hi, why not try mixing some cauliflower or spinach in with her mac n' cheese - just a tiny bit and increase it a little every now and then.

Also, does she like spag bolognese?  you can hide loads of veggies in a spag bol sauce

Fish is always a good way to introduce protein without too much notice - a mild fish like lemon sole can be mixed into most foods without being noticed.

What about fishcakes?  mix some tinned red salmon with sauted onion, tomatoe ketchup and mashed potatoe then flour, egg and breadcrumb them and shallow fry until golden - pretty easy and pretty tastey - serve with some tinned tomatoe pasta shapes if that makes them more appealing.

Fingers crossed you get some veggies and meat in that lo of yours soon  - I'm sure she'll surprise you sometime soon

What about veggies in muffins or breads?  I used to make a carrot zucchini muffin for ds when he wouldn't eat vegetables.  Or pureed veggies hidden in mac n cheese?

Can't think of any ways to hide meat - we're having the same problem here.

veggie wise - what has she tried and ever liked?  i always revert to frozen peas and corn - they are on hand, quick to cook and as good or better than fresh because they are snap frozen sealing in nutrients.  i add them to  a lot of things from pasta dishes to asian noodles, mac and cheese...she loves them because they are sweet and she can pick them out to eat or challenge her fork skills

recently i went back to the basics to get some variety in for veggies and made a tomato based sauce with peppers, onion and mushroom (all veg she refuses but are good for her) and i pureed the whole lot and served it over pasta with some ricotta cheese stirred through (i usually add ricotta to all tomato based pasta and call it "creamy pasta" as dd does not drink any milk) she ate the lot and did not know any of those veg were in there - i will be doing this more now that i have dd2 in solids too!!

protein-meat:
fish fingers
grilled/baked chicken or beef in sticky marinade of soy sauce/ketchup/honey mixed together
hokkein/asian noodles stir fried with chicken and veg in oyster sauce or black bean sauce - alex loves this and although she mostly eats the noodles and chicken and fave veg (broccoli) leaving behind  the other veg i snuck in, it is one of the best ways to cook chicken

We're vegetarians and Ella is a really fussy eater - I understand how frustrating it is!! And it's so hard not to stress about it.

I cook up batches of lentils and beans, puree them and freeze them in ice cube trays as you did when first weaning. Pop a couple into every meal she has and she's getting protein without even realising it!

And a glass of fresh orange with a meal counts as one of the fruit and veg portions - also helps them to absorb the vitamins in the food they're eating.

How funny....my picky eater is Ella also! I guess I will try hiding as much as I can....although she usually catches it! Most adults eat more than mac'n'cheese, so as with everything....this phase will soon pass.

Tofu can be mashed up and hidden in just about everything. It's a great source of protein!

My little one is the same but it is more quantiy than anything else although what she eats is limited. Anyone got any suggestions on how to encourage a 17 month old to eat more.  She is waking in the night as she does not have enough to get through the night but I cant get anything else into her before bed.  Any suggestions welcome.  Kind regards
Many thanks, Amanda
