Desperate for advice...time to wean?
« on: November 06, 2005, 03:28:54 am »
Hello all!  I desperately need advice and have really no one to turn to, my DH is supportive of whatever and no one else in my family ever BF'd so they are no help.  Anyway,  my dd has been refusing to take a bottle regardless of the fact that I intro'd it at 2 weeks (only 1/day).  I did start to thicken it and she takes it better because she gets less air, but it still isn't great.  I have been pumping and giving bottles exclusively for 2 days and she's doing better with bottles, but not great.  THe reason I'm desperate for her to take a bottle is because I HAVE to go back to work in 2/3 weeks and she HAS to take a bottle.  It's only 2 days/week, but they are long days so she'll need to take a bottle.  I've also been plagued with plugged ducts from the get go and have one today and they always make me sick, not mastitis sick, but feverish, swollen glands etc.  I've tried all the treatments too and take lecithin everyday.  Should I try to keep a bf'd at night, first thing in the a.m. and last thing in the evening?  Or at least keep one?  I'm just torn, but tired of being sick and can't fathom starving her 2 days a week.  Please help.......any advise is appreciated!

Hi,

Have you thought of trying a syringe?  Not that that is what you would want her to get used to but if you are away and she needs to it?

I think you'll find that she is much different for your care provider, and will probably take a bottle from them just fine. She will be hungry, she will eat.

There is absolutely no reason to wean her in your situation. The longer you can offer her breastmilk, whether nursing most of the week and then bottles 2x, that is fantastic.
