Am i doing ok? what next?
« on: November 07, 2005, 13:24:38 pm »
Hi,
I just need some tips and reasurance really.....

I started jude on some solids about three weeks ago. I started with baby rice but he was constipated so i stopped that and gave him apple and pear that had rice mixed with it, he was still constipated so i gave him a bit of carrot, which he liked.

Anyway for the past three days i have been giving him pear with the tiniest sprinkle of baby rice and a tiny bit of formula mixed with it all, he loves it!! :) and he has pooped at last!!

What shall i try next? or shall i just stick to pears until he is closer to 6 months. Also i have been giving it to him twice a day, shall i give it three times a day?

If i stopped the baby rice would he still be getting iron and vitamins from his milk?

Many thanks Kelly xx

Instead of baby rice try the oatmeal, which usually has the opposite effect.  (I don't know if it's the supplemental additives or the rice itself that could have caused the constipation, though.)

I've also read that you should start off with veggies so that they don't get too used to the sweet stuff and shun veggies when you introduce them later.  My guy didn't like peas (I think it was because it was too thick... he didn't like banana puree either) but he seemed to like carrots and squash.

Of course the milk should still be supplying them with all the nutrients they need.  If he has been gaining weight well and doesn't need the extra calories, stick with serving solids twice a day (but always check with a doc first - they know better).

Just my 2 cents.

Hi Georgia,

Yeh i have heard a few people mention Oatmeal, but does anyone in the Uk know where i can get this?? Tescos? Sainsburys? is it special baby Oatmeal or do i just buy Oatmeal and puree it?

I think like you said i will try him with Veg so he doesnt get used to the sweet taste of fruit, i was just following Tracys 12 week plan in which she says pears to start, but i guess what you said makes sense.

So i have just sent my Mum to the village to get me some Butternut Squash!

Thanks for your reply...

ANYONE KNOW WHERE I CAN GET OATMEAL IN THE UK???  :)

There's baby oatmeal but his pedi said I could use regular oatmeal as long as I cook it longer so that it's much softer.  I tried the instant stuff but couldn't get it very soft (I think it's because I tried cooking it with water and milk instead of just water ).  Dunno.  I ended up buying the baby oatmeal cereal.

Can't help with the other question.  I would think it wouldn't be too difficult to find oatmeal in the UK.  ;-)

Hi Kelly

Ive tried to find baby oatmeal as well with no success, tried Boots Morrisons and sainsburys.  Savannah has never gone very much anyway but since i added rice she seems to be quite uncomfortable with it, i'm going to try adding some prunes with the rice today (Mother in law said i shouldn't give them to a baby, but it has been suggested on here to get things moving)

Hopefully someone will know where to get it from in the UK?!?!?

love sallyx

Hi Sally, i will let you know if i find it.
Prunes are suggested in loads of baby books and its a well known thing to give to babies who have constipation. I wonder why your MIL thinks you shouldnt give it too babies? :?

I read somewhere fro constiaption... remember the fours P's... pears, prunes, peaches and plums.

Anyway thanks for your reply, let me know if you find it! :)
