thank you for the info, it is very helpful.  now is it ok to give dd prunes without mixing it with cereal - or pears without mixing it??  she still hasn't gone through all of her vegetables and i know she is supposed to have all of those first?  and also i have read that u aren't supposed to start on diluted juices until after six months but can u start earlier?  or should i wait - she won't take it from a bottle but she will get some out of a sippy cup for the last few weeks (she's 5 months now)

Hi teezee,

I,m not sure on this question but im sure you can give her the prunes and pear without having to mix it with baby cereal. I think some peolpe do and some dont.

Sorry i cant really help you on this, someone else will hopefully answer for you

about the constipation, my dd had that too.  i think your lo is still a bit young, but if the constipation continues, when he gets older, you can give him a spoonful of wheat germ mixed in with yogurt or a favorite fruit.  this helped my dd immensely!!!

There's no hard and fast rule that says you have to introduce all veggies before starting any fruits, so you can introduce age appropriate fruit like pears and prunes whenever you'd like. You can offer any food on its own, the main reason for mixing it with cereal is because the taste and texture are familiar, so she may be more likely to accept the new food.

Juice isn't recommended for younger babies because it often contains sugar and can fill up a baby's tummy and not leave enough room for breastmilk or formula. HTH!

Go for it. It won't hurt your baby....it will work. You don't have to mix it with anything but if you do want to mix it with the cereal that's ok to. Prunes work for my son and so did pears...I found that whenever I gave him bananas it would constipate him.
Good Luck :)

ok i have been giving dd prunes for the last few days and now i have the same prob i did when i first started the rice...and then the barley and she is getting up all hours of the night with gas/cramps   - poor thing!  so i laid off the prunes, maybe every day is too much for her, but she still hasn't had a bm (it's been 4 days now) and i can't stand having to give her anything up her poor little bum all the time.  we have a doctor appt but can't get in until the end of november - any suggestions??

Teezee-

You might try stopping solids or cutting back quite a bit for a few days until she gets back on track. Has she had problems ever since starting solids, or is this new? It's possible her digestive system may not be adjusting well to solid foods and may not be mature enough to handle them yet. The constipation, gas, and cramps make me think that she may not be physically ready for solids just yet. Just a thought. :D

she had this prob before she started solids...started right around the time she started on zantac for her reflux actually.  she did have a bm this morning, with my help pushing her knees to her chest, but still it came out.  she slept better last night - only got up once screaming, got rid of some gas and slept like an angel the rest of the night.  maybe b/c she is on solids i am expecting her to have bm's more often and i shouldn't??  i just expect with having more waste that she would have to go more often - every day or every other day at least, am i wrong assuming that?  before the solids she was exclusively bf,  before the zantac she went like 5-6 times a day!

Poop does change with solids. It isn't digested as quickly as breastmilk, so she won't go near as often as she used to. Some babies still go a couple times a day, some less, it really varies. The consistency changes too, it becomes a little more solid and sludge-like. You'll know if she's constipated if it seems like she's in pain or uncomfortable (it's hard to distinguish this from gas or tummy ache), if you see her straining to go and nothing comes out, or if her poop is rock hard and looks like little marbles or pellets.

For the gas, you might try Mylicon (not sure what it's called outside the US). A dose before bedtime might help.
