What do UK babies wear to bed?
« on: November 07, 2005, 19:34:04 pm »
As it's getting colder I am getting more and more concerned about how to dress ds for bed.  He feels so warm when he goes to sleep (7pm) but then by about 3am when the temperature drops his hands are really cold. Tonight I put him in a sleeveless vest, then a sleepsuit and then in his sleeping bag.  Does that sound about right?

Hi Daniels Mummy,
Do you have the original grobags? They come with a bedroom thermometer and tell you what to use with the sleeping bag depending on the room temp. If you like tomorrow I can post the recommendations for you when I get into dds room.

Yes, that sounds about right. Follow the instructions with the sleeping bag - it should say if it is the equivalent of e.g. 2 blankets & a sheet. I generally still make sure they have one more layer than I'm comfortable with - counting 2 layers or blanket as the same as my quilt. Babies (and toddlers) will get cold hands though so don't worry about that - check the tummy or around the neck instead, making sure they aren't too hot (sweaty/clammy) either.

That is exactly what mine is in tonight. Her hands and feet are frequently cold, like of the other mummies said, the tummy and neck are better 'indicators'.

DD was always a cold baby and needed more layers than was recommended. She would have a long sleeved vest and then a sleep suit, then the sleeping bag. On cold nights i'd put a thing blanket over her legs to give them the extra layer.

She know sleeps in short sleeved vest, pyjamas and a quilt.

My DS wears a shortsleeve vest and then a sleepsuit.

He's still swaddled at nearly 7 months with 2 blankets so we normally just put one celular blanket over him.  When his hands do come out they tend to be colder than the rest of him but he seems comfy enough.

The guidelines from the HV says that a babies room should be 18 degrees but that always seems too cold even for adults so we have his bedroom at about 20-21 degrees.

Try feeling your lo's neck or tummy and if they feel too hot take a layer off or add one if they feel cold.

Hope this helps

Hi there,

I am the opposite and worry about Alana getting too hot!!

Her room is about 19 at the moment and she is swaddled in a cotton sheet and sleeps in just a baby-grow with no vest.

I this enough or should I be dressing her up more and using a thicker blanket. She seems warm when we DF her but not sweaty so do you think she's warm enough?

We have been so paranoid about cot death that we haven't dare not have a fan all summer and she slept in just her nappy!
Thanks

I'm with  you Kat, I've always been worried about ds getting too hot. Now even at 19 months I'm sure he is cold more often than hot (or just right!). I have him in a sleepsuit and a 2.5 tog grobag. I found that the instructions that come with the grobag suggested he wear even less, but that the mothercare catalogue suggests quite a bit more. So I haven't a clue, but do worry about him getting too hot, and even when I am sure he is waking due to being cold I am reluctant to over dress him.
