"shh/pat" with no swaddle?
« on: November 08, 2005, 20:03:08 pm »
I didn't swaddle right away, and now it seems one month old Touchy doesn't like it. Seems like he resists. I wrap him up, but keep his arms out. Can Shh-pat work without it?
please help. thanks.

it can.... but it's unlikely that a baby that little can go without ANY kind of swaddle.

my touchy didn't mind his arms being free but he needed to be wrapped from the waist down pretty tightly.

usually, the ones who fight the hardest are the ones who need it the most.

my 2 cents

I found that my texbook-touchy needed to be swaddled up to 3 months.  He didn't like it, but needed it.  The Aussie swaddle worked the best for us.  I modified it a bit using the instructions from the Aussie post.  If you are interested I can email it to you.  (click on my name and send me a PM)

i think this is spot on - spiriteds also fight it and can get out of the tightest swaddle but without it there was no hope of a nap in the first 3-4 months

my textbook/angel never once protested and i think actually liked it - who knows how she woud have been without it - it was winter here so i swaddled and used blankets - she was so snug i think it helped her sleep great.

just my little babble

if you are swaddling him and with his arms free he cannot settle, i woudl put arms in (especially at 1 mo old) and do it extra tight - most people make the mistake of doing it too loose for fear of hurting baby - the point of swaddling is to make them feel secure and to create a feeling like when they were smooshed in the womb.  my Dh was great at it and most men are - as they are less woried and just pull tightly.

have you seen the announcement with the aussie swaddle technique?  this style works really well and as he gets older he can get to his hands even when they are wrapped.

with olivia - who could get out of even Dh's tighest wraps sometimes - we woudl just go in and rewrap and say night night again.  repeat as many times as necessary.  our longest naps definitely happened when Dh was on swaddle duty!

I use two SwaddleMe blankets from Kiddopotamus (?SP) and he can't break free. He looks like a baby burrito..so cute just smiling back as I put him down. I was laughing at him last night b/c he was so cute and he laughed back!! First laugh....that was at 6:15 and he is still asleep and its 5:00 am!
