when do you move beyond veggies and fruits?
« on: November 09, 2005, 02:29:01 am »
ok, so i'm reading tons of conflicting info on when you can introduce meat, breads, cheese, yogurt, etc etc. my guy is almost 7 months old and i don't want to rush anything with him, but i think he's getting bored with all the pear-apple-peach and sweet potato-peas-squash configurations.

he also keeps grabbing at the "chunks" of homemade fruit i make him, does that mean he's ready for finger foods? is it ok to venture beyond produce? i posted before about when to introduce meats, and i don't want to until he's about 8-9 months, but i'm curious about cheerios/pasta/biscuits etc, and also spices (like cinnamon in applesauce)

thanks!

We introduced Cheerios at about 7.5mos, not for nutrition, but to help her practice picking things up.  It took her a couple weeks to get from a whole hand grasp to the pincer grasp.  After she got really proficient (about 8.5mos), we started offering other finger foods.  Banana was the first, then things like well-cooked carrots and peas.  I rolled the slimy stuff in ground oatmeal to make it easier to pick up.  I've also offered her small bits of toast.

We didn't introduce meats or dairy until 9mos, but there are alot of other vegs you could introduce esp if you are up for making them yourself.  She has had (all pureed)...

bananas
prunes
pears
apples
peaches
apricots
avocados
raisins
grapes
squash
sweet potatoes
carrots
green beans
peas
potatoes
pumpkin
broccoli
cauliflower
zucchini

Beans are also an excellent source of protein.  Dd loves mashed lentils with carrots.  Also, have you offered baby cereal?  I often mix a bit of rice or barley cereal into her vegetables to thicken them up.  If your ds is quite proficient with purees, now would be an excellent time to start introducing a bit of texture, too.

Hi Selena - my little guy is just 1o days younger than yours and I think he's getting bored with the baby cereal and the standard 'starter' fruits and veggies. He's eating less of all this during the day and is now starting to wake hungry at night after 5-6 hrs when before he was sleeping 8-9 hours straight.
Was wondering how you are making out - if you've offered anything more adventurous and how it's going?

Ok.......... Mine is 7 months old and since a month ago she has had baby pasta, protein ( lentils, chicken and now beef) and dairy in youghurts, and milk I use on her cereal. I have held off on egg ( seeing my ped about that on Monday) and that is it. SHe has had pretty much every fruit and veg under the sun. Loves everything, so far no reactions to anything either.
