When is Cow's Milk Safe
« on: November 10, 2005, 14:20:56 pm »
My son was refusing his formula so when I went to the doctor yesterday he said to try cow's milk.  Is it too early for cow's milk at nine months?  He also eats yogurt and cheese daily, so how much cow's milk does he need?

Thanks

Hi

I think the recommendation for Cow's Milk to replace formula is from 12 months - this is because it doesn't contain sufficient iron. If your lo is eating solids and has a balanced diet then it might be okay, but it seems a bit early too me. I'd double check with your HV.

The doctor put him on a multi-vitamin for him to get his iron.  He is big for his age so the doctor is not concerned with his weight gain.  He eats his solids GREAT!!!  I can't force him to take formula, so if I don't use cow's milk what do I do???

Thanks for replying so quickly....

Hi

If he's taking the multi vitamin then the iron isn't an issue. The only other issue would be allergy, but if he's already eating cow's milk yoghurts and cheese with no adverse reaction then he'll probably be okay.

Try him with some and see how he gets on. You might get a couple of green poops for a while until his tummy gets used to it - just to forewarn you.

My ped said that it is ok to give them cow's milk at 9 months. Especially since your LO is eating solids really well, I'd give it a try and see how it goes.
