From Cot to Big Boy Bed - HELP!!!
« on: November 12, 2005, 14:24:41 pm »
I've writen and deleted about four beginnings to this so I am just going to get on with it.

My partner and I took the brave (stupid??) decision to move our son from cot to cot bed yesterday.  We are going on holiday next week and he is too big for the travel cot now, so we thought we would get him ready for having to sleep in a proper bed abroad by giving him just over a week to adjust in the comfort of our own home.

After fifty returnings to bed which took just over an hour (mixed in with some "leave him to see if he settles" Joseph finally fell to sleep - YAY!!

At 00:45 he fell out of the big boy bed!!!  After an hour and a quarter of "Mummy/Daddy" cryings he finally managed to get back to sleep until 07:30 this morning.  A hasty trip to Argos for one of those bed rail things has solved the falling out issue.

I have just spent a further hour from 12:45 to 13:45 trying to get him to settle for the afternoon nap.  Multiple returnings accompanied by Josephs laughter at this "game" have sent my blood pressure soaring.  I know its probably a bit too soon to expect it to improveand he needs time to adjust - does anyone have any advice or words of support from me???

How old is he?
Also- is there a rail you can put up so that he can't come out of his room? I would put up a rail, childproof the room and let it go.  Take away all toys that he could play with (you can keep them in a basket or something for easy removal if  you normally keep toys in there.)
He will most likely decide that getting out of bed and wandering around the room for  a few minutes really isn't all that fun.  And he might even sleep on the floor for a little while.  But eventually he'll figure it out. (And if you find him on the floor and think you can manage transferring him to the bed for the remainder of the nap/night, that would be nice, I'm sure.)
I think he is thinking of this as a game, like you mentioned.  So, don't make a big deal out of it.  Be firm that he must stay in his room and must sleep.  And put up a rail so he can't get out.  That's what has worked for us.   But his age might make a difference.  We moved Madeline right at her 2nd birthday.
Hang in there!

From Cot to Big Boy Bed - HELP!!!

One week on and the first time I have been able to get onto the site since I was tearing my hair our last Saturday!!!

My little boy will be 2 in December - it it wasnt for the fact we are going away I wouldn't have even thought about moving him for a good while yet.

I managed to get a safety gate onto the door to his room, so he can wander around if he wants to.  From last Sunday night we did our usual routine - bath, milk, teeth, kisses, bed with a couple of changes.  Whilst he is on my knee drinking his milk I go through what he has done during the day, then after teeth brushing I read him a book twice, then I tell him what I am going to be doing (tidying up, having tea, ironing - exciting stuff!!!) give another kiss then leave the room pulling the door to.

I haven't heard a peep out of him of an evening since Sunday night.  He's adjusted so well.  Every morning my partner and I give him loads of cuddles and praise for staying in his big boy bed.  I'll see how we go on abroad!!

Thank you so much for the advice and support.
