monsters.....
« on: November 13, 2005, 04:49:27 am »
My son who is 2.5 years old just told me tonight he is scared because of monsters in his room. Where does this idea come from? I don't know what to do I have heard of using "monster spray" but didn't want to go forth with it, without hearing from others if it is successful. I am afraid of starting another problem all together. This is our first big issue...he has slept great until about 2 weeks ago, and then tonight I think he was finally able to communicate those words to us(I NEVER have put those words out there for him).  3 nights ago when I was putting him to bed, he discovered shadows on his wall...I tried to help him through that but I severly failed and it took me 2 hours to get him to sleep, I thought I had finallt kept him in bed, but alas when I went to bed a little bit later I found him asleep on the landing of the stairs   he had come down and curled up in  a little ball.
what if aything should I do?
Thanks, Angie

hello...

I havent come across this yet as my ds is only 14mths but my sister has a 2.5yo and the same thing happened to him.

She simply said "there are no monsters allowed in this house, its against house rules, any monsters will have mummy and daddy to deal with" and that was that it worked.!!!..monsters were never mentioned again.

she is a super nanny follower and has house rules pinned to the fridge, that night the  "no monster" rule was added to the list

HTH....it seemed to simple when she told me.

Told my 3 yo the same thing a few months ago....monsters aren't allowed in our house. Never heard about monsters in middle of the night again. BTW we are making it through our Disney Movie Collection and I absolutely REFUSE to let her watch Monsters Inc!!

As far as movies go....I only WISH that he would watch TV for even 15 minutes   AAARGGHHHH he just won't... it is a good and bad thing. but everyone needs a break right?
anyhow I will try that tonight, should I bring t up, or wait for him to say it again?
Thanks, Angie

Hey there,

My 2.75year old started with the Monster business too at around the same age. Have NO idea where he got it from as we have never talked of monsters...anyways, he was a bit frightful of shadows on the walls etc and my dh started using the shadows as part of his bedtime stories characters--the good fun loving kind...at bedtime, ds turns the light out so his "friends" can come out and dh then pretends he is the shadow and then proceeds to have a full on conversation with ds who now looks forward to seeing the shadows at night! Quirky I know but it works!

We told mt dd's that monsters don't come to our house because they're scared of Daddy.Seemed to work.
However, both of them are really into Monsters Inc,although they don't watch the first 10 mins, and seem to know that if I call MI they can get the door shredded so they won't be able to try to get in.
Only works if they've seen film though.
Also regarding the shadows, this got us for months so now we have fairy lights which are dim enough for them to sleep with and bright enough to have no shadows.
Also check out any BIG cuddly toys, they can be quite scary too.

thanks to everyone! I tried the there are no monster allowed last night and so for some reason he came up with a "pig" that s in his room, we have no such pig in his room.   it was really kinda funny after the fact.still took us 2 hours to get him to bed. OHH I just don't know what to do. I am in over my head with so many other things, I just want this to go away so I can take a breath...I am overstimulted

I know it will get better thanks to all of you for your thoughts!

One more thing.
Both of you check his room before he gets into bed.Tell him monsters, pigs, animals etc aren't allowed in his house and get him to check under the bed, behind curtains etc.
May help, but may just have to ride it out.
Also may be worth trying a star chart.
I think I'm just clutching at straws here sorry
