Is a 1 to 1 1/2 hour nap enough all day?
« on: November 16, 2005, 19:27:25 pm »
My 15 month old SPIRITED toddler and I have been trying to figure out our naps. He seems ready for longer awake times and for the one nap instead of 2, but... Here is our challenge. He usually wakes at about 6-630 am, so by mid am he is tired. It would be fine if his 11 am nap lasted 2 hours, but it is at the longest 1 1/2 hours. I have tried everything including wake to sleep but nothing works. I have been trying to put him for another nap mid afternoon, but after 1 hour of him romping around, of me holding him fiirmly so he doesn't move around so he can settle, and with none of this working, I give up. He is therefore getting one short nap a day.
I am aware that when naps change from two to one, they will be longer to make up for the lost nap. Not with us.
What can I do? Should I be concerned? ( he goes to be about 6-7pm, so he is getting about 10 -12 hours a night depending on the night) Is his short day sleep okay if he is making up for it at night?

Any replys would be so appreciated.

Thank you,
Melissa

I'm not a specialist but I'd say it's OK if your DS makes up for the missing nap at night. Marcel started to nap only once a day when he was a wee bit older than 1 year and then, when he was between 20 and 21 months old, he would nap only every second or third day (and when he had his nap, he wouldn't tired enough to fall asleep until 9-9:30 pm!). %Then, when he was aroung 2 years old, Marcel stopped napping at all. But I always put him to bed earlier when he dropped a nap, so he could make up for it at night. It worked well with him. I think the main thing is that the kids get a certain amout of sleep during the day and if they are able to be awake for longer stretches of time, it isn't bad. You cannot force someone to sleep if they aren't tired, can you?

I think as long as they get at least an hour nap a day, it's great. My biggest concern with short naps is that they won't sleep as well at night because of being overtired. My dd switched to 1 nap by 14 months, and it took her a few weeks of 1 to 1 1/2 hr naps, and then she moved into 2+ hour naps, so you may just want to wait and see if your child progresses to the longer naps eventually. I wouldn't bother with the afternoon nap - it sounds like too much stress for you, and your baby may learn that he doesn't HAVE to take a nap... always a scary thought!

So as long as the night sleep is going well, I'd stick with the 1 nap and see how it goes.

I'd stick with the 1 nap as well.If he gets tired in the afternoon then he can have a nap if he wants to.Seems like he's getting enough sleep during the night.
If you want him to wait a bit longer for a nap, sometimes a mid am snack helps.(not mine though  but from other posters)
