SWADDLING TRANSITION
« on: November 17, 2005, 17:15:14 pm »
My little guy is four months old and has  been swaddled all along.  He is getting out of it and is waking up alllll the time!  The only thing is is that when we settle him he is extremely fussy until we bundle him again, then the vicious cycle starts again.
Are there any tricks to this?  It seems like we just can't stop cold turkey.  My little one needs to feel secure but he also want out of that blankie!
What do i do?

I am using a basic cotton swaddling blanket that's kind of stretchy.

When weaning my ds, we started with one arm out.  It did take a bit for him to be completely okay with that, but it worked out after a week or so.  We kept him that way for a LONG time, and then went to two arms out (so kind of just using it as a regular blanket that way) for a while, then got rid of it completely when it would be off in about 10 minutes!

I need to know when to stop as well but from what i have read you will know when they dont want swaddling as they will get out of any blanket!!  I will carry on swaddling for as long as ds wants.  I think the norm is about 7-8 months but some people still swaddle at up to 15 months.  Just do whats best for you and your baby.

If you want to wean him from it now maybe someone will be able to tell you how to do it, i think you do it gradually by leaving just one arm free and so on until no blanket at all.

If he can self sooth with his fingers that will be a bonus too.

I had the miracle blanket for ds, and used it on him fully until he was about 5 months old.  Then I started leaving one arm out for him to suck his thumb.  We did that for a long time, probably another 2 months.  By that point, he was able to break out of the miracle blanket simply due to his size.  So, I started leaving both arms out, and still wrapping it around his middle and tucking his feet in.  We did that for a while, and then got rid of it completely.  But we did wean in stages, so that he was comfortable.  They get used to that blanket, and realize that it means it's time to sleep!

I thought the miracle blanket was the best ever!  I have two, and I would switch them out, and if he wet through one or spit up on one, then I had the other one to use during naps while the other was being washed.

Anyway, well worth the money if you want to try it.
