How long after stopped bf does supply dry up?
« on: November 17, 2005, 18:53:09 pm »
Hi all

Just wondering if anyone has experienced the same as me. I gave up breastfeeding approx 6 months ago but every now and then over the last few weeks I thought I felt my nipple leaking. Today I thought it again so I tested and I managed to get some liquid out of both sides. I was so freaked out as I was sure it had all gone that I didn't try any further. So now I am thinking one of three things..

1) It hasn't dried up yet and my hormones are still all over the shop
2) It had dried up and now has come back cos I'm preggers again (I'm sure I'm not as I just had a period and we haven't been exactly active lately  but now I'm wondering!!)
3) None of the above and that it may be something more sinister and that it is discharge rather than milk/colostrum.

Please could someone respond as my brain is going nine to the dozen and I'm wondering if I should get myself off to the docs tomorrow.

Thanks
Sara

I'm sure someone else can give you more info but really quickly I've heard that this is very normal. Some women can still produce very small amounts of milk after years! It doesn't mean your hormones are weird. It doesn't mean your pregnant or anything sinister. You need to avoid stimulating milk production and eventually it will subside.
p.s check out 'the couch'.

Absolutely normal. Some women have still some milk even 2 years after weaning. 6 months is quite normal to have some leaking accidents happening. Not too pleasant but normal. Yeah, don't stimulate, and don't panic  .
