Gripe Water - Do you use it?
« on: November 20, 2005, 04:12:11 am »
My 4WO DD has terribly painful gas roughly twice a day - around 6am and 6pm.  Both my husband and I are very diligent about trying to burp her during and after all of her bottles, but to be honest, most of the time we are unsuccessful (we pat firmly, rub, bounce individually and in combination).  She also is a VERY hiccupy little girl and they can last 20 minutes or more.

I bought some gripe water today but have read SO MANY times that a baby doesn't need anything except breastmilk/formula that I am hesitant to use it.  Do you use it?  If so, when (before/after feeding)?  And, how much would you recommend for a 4 week old?  (The bottle bases it on weight.)

Thanks for your feedback!

We did use gripe water when my ds was little.  I would always put the gripe water right into his bottle as that was the easiest way to give it to him.  Also I found the best way to burp him was sitting up and then rubbing his back in an upward motion.  I can't remember the dosage we used as that was a long time ago but if you know your dd wieght then you can go by that.

We used it, but with little success, also little success with Infacol (Simethicone), but we did have enormous success with Colief (not cheap though :( )

There is a search feature at the top of the forum, underneath the logo, but it's not working properly, but you can use this link to search the forums;

Hi! We used gripe water with DS and it really seemed to work I gave it to him using the little squiters you get in the bottles of infacol(infacol didnt seem work!) DS soon got used to having it after his feed. We used to wind him by putting him on his tumm across our knee then rubbing his back, he also held on to his wind terribly and often all we could do was be with him whilst he was upset could there was nothing else we could try. Dont worry about it harming your LO my MIL (a HV) highly recommends it, you might find that what worked for some LO wont for others so try others on the mraket if you dont have sucess with gripe water.

Hope that helps!

I used Gripe Water for my DD for the 1st couple of months.  I diluted the alcohol free kind (fennel oil) in some water and fed it to her like that.  I used a ml medicine dropper and I think I did two dropers full to 2 oz of water.  I would give her sips periodically through the day (when fussy) and right before naps.  It really seemed to help her, namely with hiccups - she was the hiccup queen!!  HTH

I also wanted to say that I told my ped. that gas drops didn't work and she told me to give them to her BEFORE her feeds namely the feeds that she became fussy after and it worked a treat then!

we used Gripe water for our DD for the first few months. It worked great for mild gas. When she had it really bad we used Oval. It worked like a charm. The gripe water also helped when DD was constipated.

Oh my goodness - gripe water is salvation!  It is THEEEEEEEEEEEEEE greatest.  Josh was an angelic baby after being given 5ml of gripe water before a feed.  In fact we also use a 'dummy dip' - dip his dum in the gripe water and it completely settles him and usually sends him off to sleep.

Its great for Josh but all bubas are different...!
