Dream Feeding - Dumb Questions
« on: November 22, 2005, 02:54:04 am »
We're thinking about starting DF with our little one to get better blocks of sleep at night, but I have some rather simple questions.

1.  Do I actually pick her up out of her crib, hold her and feed her?  Or, do I just pop the paci (if she hasn't already spit it out), leave her in her crib and hold the bottle to her mouth?  Will she choke/cough if I leave her in her crib (slight incline, but sleeping on her back)?  If she does cough, won't it wake her up more than we want, defeating the whole DF concept?

2.  What about the diaper change?  She ALWAYS wakes up for her diaper change.  In fact, at night, we actually change first, then feed so she can let the food make her drowsy.

Thanks for answering these simple questions!

Hello!
How old is your dd?  You do want to pick her up and feed her.  It isn't unusual for her to stir/wake up a little bit.  She may take as little as 2 ounces, especially at first.  Since she should still be sleeping, theren't shouldn't be a need to burp....

I did the same as you, change the diaper first so the feeding would make her sleep again.  Though I wouldn't change her unless she pooped.  And if she pooped in the middle of the DF then I changed her and continued with the DF after.   :D

She's 4.5 weeks old.  I guess my preference would be to let her stay in her crib if she's not going to choke/gag because removing her from the crib can jostle her awake - although the food seems to send her back to dreamland pretty well.  And, I'd probably be more comfortable holding her versus hovering over her crib holding a bottle.

what I do is leave her in the crib (changer diaper only if ABSOLUTELY neccassary and use LOTS of vaseline) but I put my arm under her head to prop her up a bit more. I'm basically leaning over the crib but I'm short so it's not too uncomfortable. I found that she settled far more quickly doing it this way rather than picking her up.
huh?

We did Molly's dream feed out of the crib when she was little (I think we started the DF at about 10 weeks) and as she got older (4 months) we just left her in the crib and fed her that way.

I think you can do either, whatever you feel comfortable with. I always wanted to burp her afterwards even though she was sleeping and didn't need to burp, I felt I should burp her.

Try both ways and see what works for you!

I would suggest  doing the diaper first.  The nights I didn't  ds woke up because he's soaked and cold.  I just gently put him on the changer and do not talk to him or make a sound.  He wakes us a little, sometimes crys, but by the time I get him to the rocker and the bottle in his mouth, he falls right asleep and will usually go until 5:30 or 6:00 am.

Good Luck!  I'll pray for a good night sleep for you!
