3yo not going to sleep on her own
« on: November 22, 2005, 12:05:43 pm »
Please help.  My three year old will not go to sleep on her own. I say will not, as I know she can - she does it at day care :x  Now, this may take a while to explain.  Ever since she was born, she was put to sleep in our arms (not very bright, I know, but I hadn't seen Tracy's TV show, or heard about her books then!!). We finally got her, at 2 1/4 to go to sleep in her bed, only with one of us sitting on the chair next to her bed. She will not go to sleep otherwise. I desperately need some help.  I know I am the cause of it, and I know she will adjust to a new routine (we've just gone 11 days with out a dummy now, so it can be done :D ), but the constant crying and calling out when I put her back to bed is waking my 11mo  so I end up sitting next to her again until she falls back asleep. HELP :?

A mum a while ago said she did an envelope for bedtime with her lo.
In the envelope were pictures of things to do before bed, wash face/bath,brush teeth,pj's,kiss goodnight, stories etc.
Go through the pictures (print from net if needs be) 1 by 1 and get lo to pick them out and go through the actions.
When everything is done, calmly say goodnight and leave the room.
If she gets up,take her by the hand and calmly tell her it's bedtime and put her into bed.
After the 3rd time take her by the hand and put her to bed without saying a word and carry on until she's asleep.(I'v eseen this on a programme and it takes a while, but works)

I have always done a starchart and if she stays in bed she gets a star,if she gets out of bed she gets a sad face (print chart from http://www.dltk.com )Jess goes mad if she has a sad face,it does the trick though.

Being 3 you might be able to explain early in the day what you plan to do at bedtime so she'll know what to expect.Don't give in,I've been there

Thanks Sarah,

I think I'll try the pictures. I just don't know what else to do.

Thanks Sarah (for advice) and Vanessa (for bringing up the issue).
I have already printed out my chart for DD (although she goes to be on her own and usually sleeps through) but I obviously have other issues for a terrible two
Now where can I buy those stars/sad faces in Turin.......................?
