When did you drop the bedtime bottle?
« on: November 22, 2005, 13:03:48 pm »
My dd is 18 months old and still loves her bedtime bottle.  It has become a part of bedtime routine and I am worried that if we try to change it, bedtimes will be a nightmare.  My health visitor has said she should be drinking it out of a cup but when we did that with her morning one it didn't go down too well and she doesn't drink much of it.  I want to make sure she is still getting enough milk as she will not eat cheese (we have tried so many times but she seems to hate it) she does have yoghurt everyday but if she decides won't drink the milk out of the cup she definitely will not be getting enough calcium.

Is it terrible for her to still have a bottle at this age?  Is the problem just about teeth as I clean them after she has the bottle?

Any tips on how you got you lo's off the bottle would be great.

My DS just dropped his bedtime bottle and won't drink it out of a cup but he still has one in the morning.

I'm just going to leave it until he drops it of his own accord.

If you want to drop it, have you tried a cup and a cuddle on your lap in the darkened room with a story to take her mind of the lack of bottle?

PS I hate cheese as well, don't worry about it, I have a full set of teeth and bones.  As long as she gets other sources of calcium it will be fine.

Hi Lisa,

My DD dropped her bedtime bottle at about 14mths, she just did it herself one day.  With regards to the bottle does she have her juice in a beaker in the day?? if so perhaps just slowly keep introducing milk in a beaker and see if she will have it.  Also what beaker is she using? my dd didn't like the hard plastic ones she would only drink out of a nuby which is soft teat.

to be honest i think the trick is to be consistent and persistent, pain i know!

Lisa

I am struggling w/ this too - if it makes you feel any better.

DD will take any sip cup i offer and loves it, but only w/ water (no juice, and NO milk).  She also won't take juice in a bottle.

She has a am bottle, lunch time and dinner time, so no bedtime - she doesn't want a cuddle/bottle before bed, i guess that is good  :?

I guess there are rules in her world about milk and water and how we drink them - tee hee.

I am worried but not too worried, yet.  She dropped her paci on her own, so maybe this too she will drop when she is ready.

Thanks for your replies.

She does drink water out of a cup and now is having her morning milk out of the cup too, I guess it took her a while to get used to the idea.  Now she has taken to that I suppose will have to introduce the cup at night time as well, am so scared that she will freak out and we will have a few nights with tears before bedtime but hopefully won't take too long.  I did hope she would drop the bottle herself but doesn't look likely.

OMG!!
I should be worrying then. My DD is 28mths and still has moring and night bottle.
She has a bottle of milk and biscuits in the morning (it's just handy) and she wolfs that down in about 3 minutes. Then before bed she has a small bottle of just milk and that is part of her bedtime routine and she asks for it.
I don't think this is doing her any damage - neither to her teeth nor her behaviour. She has normal beakers during the day and the odd glass or 2 if we are out and about. Maybe it is an Italian thing but no-one is too worried about taking their toddler's bottle away for brekkie.

Ciao

I stopped Georgia's bottles completely by 12 months.  We did it gradually by changing one bottle to a sippy at a time.  You could probably even offer the sippy for a few slurps then give the bottle if you are super nervous.

We then went to offering her a cup of milk at breakfast, supper and in bed.  We then changed the bed one to water and now she has milk with every meal (about 3 ounces) and before bedtime...water for sips during the day and snacks (in bed still too).

Try a few different sippies if she seems to have a preference and often I've heard by warming it a little (or making it super cold - that's how Georgia likes it) will help too if you previously heated the bottle.

Good luck.

My DD is 22 months and despite a couple of failed attempts  at transitioning to cup from bottle we are still having morning and betime bottles.

Personally, I have decided that I really don't care for the time being - it's not as if she walks around during the day with a bottle hanging out of her mouth - no-one else can see  :) . She drinks water all day from a variety of cups - some with lids, some not.

Besides, she still looks so cute laying on her fluffy pillow having her bedtime bottle

p.s. I am also a Lisa and also from Hampshire - whereabouts are you ? We live in Sandhurst.

my dd is 14mo's and i can't seem to get her on a sippy for milk too. even teh nuby one! she will drink water from her sippy but NO milk, as soon as she tastes that it's milk, she spits it out and gives it back to me saying "all done". lol.....
i'm not sure what to do. i'm not even sure how or when i should be cutting otu bottles. she only has 2 bottles. one in themorning and one at bed. if i cut out bedtime bottle, how will she make it up since she won't drink it ina  cup at mealtimes, only water?
sigh.....this is harder than i thought...and as for the paci, that's a whole diff story. she only has it in her bed, but i dont' ever see her giving that up!! lol
