3 month old won't sleep through
« on: November 22, 2005, 20:58:35 pm »
After some ideas, my 3 month old boy is exclusivley breast fed.
He feeds approx every 2 hrs during the day ad seems to have developed his own EASY routine, and usually goes to bed around 7 - 7:30 he has slept through till 6.30 about three times when he has been put to bed late at around 10pm if we have been out.
but generally wakes twice during the night.
he has a feed before going to bed and will usually wake around 11-12 for a feed, then will wake every 3 hours after that even with a big feed..??
i have tried a dream feed but he always wakes up, so thought it best to leave him till he wakes up.
Just after any ideas...

Is he taking a full feed at each of those wakings?  If so, I'm sorry, hun, but he needs the milk, and he's going to keep waking for it.  He's at a growth spurt age now, too, so that could be casuing him to wake more to feed.

If he's not taking a full, feed, try cutting out one of those night feeds and use pat/shush or PU/PD (not sure which is appropriate here; help me out everyone.. I didn't sleep-train until dd was 9 months old  ).  Then you can cut out one of the others if he still is not taking a full feed.

Is it hard to get him back down after the dream feed?  If so, I can see why you'd skip it.  But if he goes back to sleep easily, why not do it anyway; it might buy you a little more sleep time.

Sorry I don't have more help.  Just keep in mind that it will get better.  I promise.

wow ..quick response... generally i think he takes a full feed difficult to tell with breast feeding, but he swallows well and each feed take about the same amount of time, during the night he is quite awake at the feeds and is some times hard to wind which doesn't help as this wakes him more!! but if i put him down he will wake 10 mins later with wind!! can't win!! he is quite a happy chappy during the day so i'm sure he is feeding well

Hi, my little boy is 10 weeks old. Also exclusively breast fed. Thriving, has gained around 5.10 lbs since birth. Started trying to get him on a 3 hour EASY 10 days ago, but he wants to feed every 2 hours (fast eater - 5 mins & he's emptied my breast). Is a crappy day napper (classic 'spirited' baby - often hard to settle, and wont go past 45 mins), goes to bed around 7:30pm. Generally sleeps well at night - was sleeping through till around 1-2 am. After reading The Baby Whisperer I thought I should introduce a Dream Feed at 11pm to hopefully encourage him to sleep his long stretch from then (aiming to get him to sleep till 5 or 6am). I have done this for 2 nights now and its just been a waste of time, as he woke again at 1:30am the first night, and 2:30am last night. Up again at 5:30am or 6am and then theres no getting him back to sleep. So, I can empathise with you. Really feel like giving up, but want to help him develop good sleep habits so will stick with it a bit longer. Though, the shush/patting at nap time is starting to drive me nuts!!!

Hi, my LO is 3 and half months old and has only slept through 3 times.  He has a bedtime of around 7.30, he sometimes wakes half hour later but I can soothe him back to sleep with cheek stroking and paci after 5 minutes.  He then gets a dream feed around 11 and then will wake up around 3.  Most of the time he is only awake for 5 minutes as thats all it takes to soothe him but last night he was very awake and it took me almost an hour!  He then woke up at 7.15.  I think if a baby sleeps through at this age you are very lucky.  I guess as I am not expecting it I don't mind that he is awake once a night he will get there eventually!  I am going to try and wean him off the paci though as both he and I have become dependant on it!! lol
