Resisting bottle - go to sippy?
« on: December 02, 2005, 00:16:01 am »
Well, despite repeated tries, Natalie is NOT thrilled about her bottle any more, and this basically ties me to the house in the evenings....you know, when MOVIES happen, when DINNER happens in restuarants, that kind of thing. In ther words, NO DATE NIGHTS WITH DH!!!! :( :( :(

DH said that a mom at his work told him that they had a similar problem and solved it by going to a sippy cup of EBM/formula. I'd rather do that than keep throwing the EBM I saved during Nat's last cold down the drain when she won't drink it from a bottle and it goes bad.

On the other hand, I wasn't able to wean Josie from sippies till she was 3-1/2, and she still needs a cup with a straw 'cause I didn't manage to get her to drink from regular cups when it would have been easier.  This is why I'm kinda reluctant to go to sippies, BUT I have to admit, the idea of being able to go out in the evenings - and EVENTUALLY go to WORK and make some MONEY and get out of DEBT is kinda appealing! :) :?

So..... might the sippies (which I finally packed in a box and gave away LOL) be the answer? Should I even TRY them? Or should I wait a while till she can drink from a regular cup? (which she is actually TRYING to do!!!)

What do you think? Tell me about your experiences????

Deb, Liam has hardly been offered any bottles, when he did NEED to take one when I was out all day he took enough - just... but that was 6 weeks ago & I haven't done it since... I am about to start offering milk from a sippy now he is 6mo & completely skip the bottle stage... I had problems getting Aiden off the bottle, but he takes a cup most of the time now... so I think all lo's are different.  I personally would offer the sippy & then pick a point (for me it will be 12mo) to start giving a drink from an ordinary cup. For me the thing about 2nd time around is you can "plan" based on what happened last time KWIM.
So go with the sippy, but have a "time" to start the other cup & set a strategy for it... hey we can plan/implement it together down the track if you like

I had that problem about this time last year with DS so at about 6 months.  I posted about it and someone told me to be happy that he didn't want a bottle in the evening, their LO was 3 and still wanted a bottle!

That sounds nice, but if she doesn't take the bottle then she wants the boob, and I don't have any local babysitters lactating at the moment!

dd is 5 1/2 months old and I started her on a straw cup this week. I put ebm in it and she's doing really well. She's unable to get a huge amount out yet but I figure it won't take too long. If it goes good I plan on going straight from breast to sippy cup. Good luck, I think it's a good plan.

I would try a sippy.  You can always continue on giving her water and some ebm from a regular cup and as she gets better with the regular cup reduce the amount you use the sippy.  At least that is the theory I am working on with ds  .....

My guy is the exact same way! He just turned six months-he will not take the bottle (unless I'm the one giving it to him). We tried the sippy cup; which he loved-and then I read about kids not being able to give them up. Well, we're doing the cup right now. It's messy, but I've read it's going to be messy at some point-why not do the mess now and get it over with. So, he has solids once a day and gets a cup of water after (a toy size cup with about a tablespoon or two of water). We're also giving him a little breastmilk in it when we're eating dinner. He's doing fabulous with it! It's really working-he can't hold it himself too well yet; but for the most part-it's working great. So, I say-try the cup at least. If it works, you'll have you answer, if not, go for the sippy. :)
