Question about extending naps for 11 wk. old
« on: November 28, 2005, 21:13:35 pm »
My 11 wk. old daughter recently began napping only 45 minutes at a time. I have been going in and getting her out of her crib, and then sometimes she'll fall back to sleep in my arms if I'm on the computer or something. Today, though, I decided to try to put her back to sleep in her crib. Boy, was she mad!   I couldn't believe how she was crying! But she kept drifting off to sleep, and then she'd wake up and cry some more. I was pretty sure she hadn't gotten enough sleep because her eyes were very heavy, she was rubbing them, and she fell asleep several times in my effort to extend her nap. I had fed her at 7:00, and then at 8:00, I did sort of a wind-down, then put her down at 8:30. She woke up at 9:20, and cried and struggled until 9:55, when she fell asleep. Soooo... on a 3-hr. cycle, she would have been due for a feeding at 10:00, just 5 min. later. Should I have let her sleep or woken her up to feed?

I suggest reading the 'Wake to Sleep' posting by Matthew's Mum at the top of this forum. Will teach you how to re-settle her.

My question isn't so much about HOW to resettle her - I did read that article, and it was really good. My question is: When it takes long enough that they fall back to sleep right before they are "supposed" to wake up for the next feed, should I let her sleep through it for a little while, or wake her up, feed her, and then put her back down? If that issue is specifically addressed in the article, can you point it out to me? Maybe I'm missing it.

Just my two cents

My two cents is that sleep trumps all––at least to a point.

If your little one is a healthy weight and gaining fine, and if you just got him to sleep, I definitely would not wake him to eat for at least an hour or 1 1/2.  If you do, you will probably end up with a seriously tired, cranky baby who will want to fall asleep at the breast without properly eating anyway.

I'm on baby number two now; with number one I was very rigid about the feeding schedule and would wake him to feed him like you're describing; I regret it now.  I'm much more relaxed with feeding times with number two--feeling like sleep is the most important cuz that's where I struggled with my first--and I think things are going better because of that.  BTW, my baby is quite big (almost 16 lbs at 4 months) so this attitude definitely hasn't hurt his growth!

Let us know how it goes...

Great question, if you feed at 7 and 8 then definately let her sleep till at least 11am or 11.30!
