8.5 mo unable to digest finger foods?

Warning, a bit gross.

We gave DS (over 8 mos) his first finger foods the other day at lunch, Gerber veggie puffs.  He ate two of them.  That night he cried, initially refused his dreamfeed, and was up a 2 hr stretch before he got back to sleep.  The next day he was straining to poop all morning, when he finally did that afternoon the two puffs were in there -- they had not digested.

Is this normal for a child this age???? DS has two teeth, don't know if that makes a difference.  I thought the puffs are supposed to dissolve (tested some in my mouth before giving to DS)?

I think we'll be sticking to purees for a while longer and at least continue to hold off on meats/dairy until after his doctor's appointment in a couple of weeks.

We've never tried the veggie puffs, but there are a number of finger foods that have passed through dd undigested.  Generally, if food is passing through undigested, it is a sign that their systems just aren't ready for it.
