am i doing it wrong? i need advice!!!
« on: November 30, 2005, 14:34:37 pm »
my ds has been eating solid food for about three weeks.  we started with a meal at breakfast (babyrice soon became veg) and moved onto veg at dinner and just yesterday, lunch too (almost always veg -squash, sweet potato, carrot, parsnip, avocado, banana).
Ethan seems to love his food -esp the pear and squash concoction that was his breakfast this morning (he wolfed down two pots, about 7 ice cubes worth!)
i got scared though when i read about how much babies still need breastmilk.  (we are offering breastmilk between meals whenever Ethan wants it - tho not with meals so he gets a morning feed, bedtime feed and dream feed)  i can't tell how much milk my ds gets when he bfs and i am now worried that my son might not be getting enough milk (though he does feed a while).
up until now i have just been so focused on getting him ready for being in daycare and weaning just seemed part of that process!  can anyone tell me how often their lo still bfs?  are three feeds enough? please advise!!
thanks!

Wow, what a hungry little man! That's great that he's taken so well to solids! Most babies that age take 3-4 breastfeeds each day. You're right that breastmilk is most important right now...if you're concerned, there are some steps you can take to ensure he's getting enough. You can switch his eating schedule around a bit so that you're offering breastmilk first, then solids 1 hr or so later. That helps make sure that he's filling up on the good stuff first. You can also try adding in another nursing so that he gets 4 per day, but I know that's easier said than done. It does sound like he's eating more solid food than average, but that doesn't necessarily mean he's eating too much. He might just be really hungry! If he takes a bottle, you can also try pumping for a few feeds to get a rough idea of how many ounces he's getting throughout the day. HTH!

thanks!
he IS getting three feeds everyday. he just eats like a trouper too!  He is going into daycare three days a week (long days- from 8 til 6) so until i started doing more nutritional reading i was just pretty excited that he was doing the weaning thing so well.
i guess if i express a feed for nursery and he still gets a morning feed, one after dinner and a dreamfeed that might be okay... its so hard now that you can't just trust them to eat what they need the way they did with breastmilk
it just keeps getting more confusing!!!
