Occasional bottle - suggestions?
« on: November 30, 2005, 23:01:21 pm »
Hi there!
I could use some suggestions…..
My DD is 6.5 mo. old and she is EBF. She BF 4 times a day (7-11-3-6) and I pump at 10 pm so I have BM for her cereals. I plan on BF until she is at least 1 year old, but I would like her to get used to an occasional bottle (I feel like I just need a little break sometimes.) I would like her to take EBM, but I don’t know how I should go about doing that? It seems silly to pump first and then feed the BM in a bottle, but that was what I was thinking of doing. (Even though that would make it that the "break" wouldn't be that much of a break after all.) How do the mommies out there do this? Does anybody have any suggestions for me? I guess I am not too worried (yet!) about her taking the bottle as I am about how to work it out.

What I have been advised by the lactation consultant at the hospital is to pump after a feed, that way, you will start increasing your milk supply.  This will give you more milk to consistently be able to pump after the feed, as long as you pump at the same time everyday.  The first few days you won't get too much, but it will gradually increase.

I dont' see any problem with wanting to get out.  My ds is only 4 months and I do!!

Perhaps have someone else give the bottle, because babies are smart and would rather nurse than take a bottle for themost part, so if you aren't around, it may be easier.  Is DH home for the a.m. feed?  Maybe that would be a good time.  I know I can't give ds a bottle and he takes one like a champ from dh.

Hope this helps.

I used to pump at about 9am and keep it till the evening feed - in the morning I always seemed to have an excess available and that also meant that dh could give the evening feed too.  I found it was a really good idea to get her used to the bottle just in case - I still bf but on occasions eg while stuck in the car I have had to give her a bottle.  It took a few tries for her to get used to a bottle (at 4mo) but there are lots of tips on this forum for that!
