Question to all re: swaddling
« on: December 01, 2005, 18:44:57 pm »
Just trying to get an idea of when people stopped swaddling their babies.  How did you know to stop?  Did it take a while for your baby to get used to sleeping without being swaddled?  My dd is 7 weeks old and will be 12 weeks when I have to return to work.

I am asking as I have to return to work about 5 weeks.  I met with the daycare facility that my dd will be going to yesterday.  I talked with the ladies that take care of the infants and I mentioned that I swaddle my daughter for her naps as she wakes herself from her reflexes.  The ladies looked at me with a blank stare as they had no idea what I was talking about.

Maybe I am just paranoid, but I fear that when I leave her at the daycare facility, they may try to get her to nap without swaddling and she just won't go for it.  Then I will end up picking up a very cranky baby who has't been napping well.

Does anyone else have their baby in daycare and ask that the staff swaddle?

I still kind of swaddle Tyler for his nap, and he'll be 2 this month. I did a full Aussie swaddle with a bedsheet until he was 8 mo, then I very slowly transitioned to wrapping his legs with a normal thin blanket. He didn't need it anymore, but the act of swaddling was a strong sleep cue for him so I kept doing it. Now the blanket is his lovey...after I put him in the crib, he usually pulls it off his legs and cuddles up with it.

If your DD's startle reflex is still waking her, then I don't think it's time to think about weaning the swaddle just yet. As for the daycare, it's their job to do what you ask, even if they think it's weird...she's YOUR child. If you're concerned, you might stop by unannounced during nap time every so often to see how it's going.

I weaned completely at around 6-7 weeks.  It took her about a week to get the hang of it.   :D
