New Here - An Introduction and a Question
« on: December 02, 2005, 14:44:19 pm »
I've been lurking on these boards for a few months and decided to finally post!  My name is Kelly and my sister is a moderator on this board - she is the one who pointed me over here.  My husband and I had a baby 5 weeks ago today - Cora Rose.  We have been only breastfeeding since birth.

Now my question - Cora and I seem to have a latch problem.  I've had some pain since starting bfing though it has gotten better and worse.  I have a fast milk letdown and seem to have a lot of milk and she chokes a lot.  This is causing her to seem to try to use her gums to smash down on my nipple.  I am trying really hard to get her in really deep and this seems to make her more mad and she slips down off and tries to slow down the milk with her gums again.  How can I keep her from doing that?  I've tried to keep her up over the top of me so she doesn't feel like the milk is spraying down her throat (on the advice of a lactation consultant), but even that doesn't seem to be helping.  Any advice would be appreciated!!

hello, I myself have a fast letdown and my daughter chokes and sputters as well. What I have found that works is side laying is bed as my milk doesn't flow as fast then and she chokes less. If I feed her in a chair (reclining one) I lean the chair back slightly so gravity doesn't allow the milk to flow out so quickly. I hope these tips might help you! Good luck!

Welcome, KelliAnn!

I'm sure the link Monika provided should give you plenty of info, but just wanted to add that I've heard some women will pump for a minute or two before starting to nurse to get past that super-charged letdown phase.
