So confused (and tired) please help

I am trying EASY on a now 10 week old.  He is vey colicy and cries all the time.   I read in the book not to allow more than 45 to an hour nap in the begining.  But, he is so overtired and crying all the time.  What do you do with all the extra Awake time?  When I did let him sleep a lot more in the day, he didn't cry at all.  But, I paid big time at night with hourly wakings.  I just don't know what I am doing wrong?  Should I stay with him all night and pat him?   I feel that is what I am doing now anyway.

Hi, after a few weeks of battling with my now 10.5 week old I was ready to give up. The shush/patting was driving me insane and I was dreading nap times. Don't mention nights!!!! I don't recall advice on limiting naps, in fact I'm sure Tracy recommened napping for at least 90mins, 3 times a day for babies at this age. Longer day napping should not interfere with night sleep, but it should help your baby sleep more soundly at night. I also found the Sleep Sense website (http://www.sleepsense.net) to be extremely helpful. After just 3 days my LO is sleeping from 7pm till 2:30am, quick feed, straight back to sleep till 7am. Naps are still a bit of a battle trying to extend from 45 mins to 90 mins, but at least he's napping in his cot rather than on me!! Hope this helps.
