I could be pushing it...
« on: December 05, 2005, 00:33:26 am »
Ella is 8 weeks old tomorrow. I am finding with the wake and feed at 3 hours she doesn't seem 100% hungry. She is awake and in a good mood after a 1.5-2 hour nap, she eats a bit and then is looking around (compared to weeks ago when she would be ravenous for the breast). I find then she only takes as much to fill her up, stays up for her activity time then goes to sleep for her nap. This is where sometimes the problems starts, since she didn't eat a ton, she makes it in nap time for about an hour then she is hungry (we cannot get her back down sleeping, nor does anything else comfort her). Ella was born 8 pounds, 13 ounces, her check-up at five weeks she was 11 pounds, 7 ounces. She is gaining approx. 1.5 ounces a day, which is more than good, I know. Tomorrow is her 8 week visit and I wouldn't be surprised if she is between 13-14 pounds. Could I entertain the possibility of moving to a 3.5 easy, would this remedy her being more hungry at E time? I know she is young, but she also weighs more than some 3-4 month olds. Please help :)

Just listen to your baby. If she needs a couple cycles at 3.25 or 3.5 hrs, she is gaining weight fine, she will be ok. If she wants to feed more frequently in the evenings, you could let her make it up a little then and go every 3 or sooner. You two seem like you have a good supply going, and nursing is going great!

Hi,

Just to back up what Stacy said... I have a 10 week old. She was 12lbs when weighed last week. We do this... She feeds on a 3.5 - 4 hour EASY cycle in the morning and early afternoon. Then she fits in a couple of extra feeds later in the day (cluster feeds so that she is not too hungry at night). Last night she slept for a 6 hour stretch  :) . Her exact schedule does vary but my point is - try it and see - it works for us at the moment.

BTW my son was smaller and would never have gone this long without a feed at the age.
