HOW TO WEAN OFF OF WATCHING TELEVISION BEFORE BED?
« on: December 13, 2005, 19:28:26 pm »
I'VE GOTTEN INTO THE TERRIBLE HABIT WITH MY SON WHO WILL BE 3 IN MARCH OF WATCHING TELEVISION FOR ABOUT 1/2 HOUR RIGHT BEFORE BED.  I DO THIS SO I CAN GET HIS 8 WEEK OLD SISTER TO SLEEP ETC. ANY SUGGESTIONS ON HOW TO CUT IT OUT AND BEGIN READING INSTEAD? I'VE TRIED, BUT HE BASICALLY THROWS A FIT AS HE IS SO USED TO IT. THE PROGRAMS HE IS WATCHING ARE THOSE LIKE LITTLE BEAR, FRANKLIN ETC...I'VE COME TO REALIZE NO MATTER HOW MELLOW THE PROGRAM SEEMS, ANY TYPE OF T.V BEFORE BED IS TERRIBLE....
HELP!!!!!!!

I haven't got any advise really, only to say that when my two have their milk we always watch Fifi and The Flowertots, then Emily knows it's bedtime and now says night night.
Jessica watches Little Bear and goes to the toilet then asks to go to bed.
I'm quite happy with this as I read Jessica's book when Emily has gone to bed,but while she's watching Little Bear.

Don't know if this does anything to help,is it worth not having the tv on from about 4.30pm to see if he misses it.

What if you tried to compromise about the tv - at 3 I think my son understood compromises fairly well. I currently often let him watch a half hr right before dinner (something fairly mellow like a Little People video) - such a great time so he's not crazy running around the house and I can get dinner made without being stressed.

If you make your son feel like he's making the choice himself to move tv time up you might get a double win - calm pre-dinner time and then book time before bed.
