Best way to wind down
« on: December 14, 2005, 07:25:18 am »
I am trying to find the best way to wind down for a nap, I have a 3 month old son who we dont swaddle because we found he slept better without it (a bit touchy/grumpy), at the moment we take him into his room about 10 mins before so he is away from all the noise, then we close the curtains and turn on some music for him to listen to but i havnt found a definate signal that its naptime, like what swaddling wound usually represent,

at night he seems to go down fine because of his bath and feed before bed but during the day he still thinks its play time,

what is your ideal winddown routine?

I make our wind down short, so my ds doesn't get overdone.  We go in his room, have a diaper change, then sit in the chair and sing one lullaby (different than what I sing at night).  Then I put him in his crib and that's that!  I think just repetition of whatever will work; it just takes a while for them to catch on!

i have always used a goodnight saying / phrase (for olivia it is "sleepytime nighty night " every single sleep) with my girls which is a very clear end of windown routine as i put them in bed and then turn on noise machine (playing ocean waves)

Have you thought about getting a baby sleeping bag? As soon as I put dd in hers she knows it's time to go to sleep. If I read her tired signs right, she often rolls onto her tummy herself and closes her eyes before I even get the zipper closed!
