if you don't eat dairy what do you eat?
« on: December 15, 2005, 20:43:32 pm »
I was thinking of cutting out dairy (well, at least some) to see if it will help my EBF dd with all the gas she has been having.  I know there are a lot of people around here that don't eat dairy and I was hoping you could give me an idea of what you eat then???  I am stumped, I didn't realize how much dairy I eat until I thought about not eating it and couldn't come up with anything else.  I always have cereal for breakfast, usually cheese or yogurt for lunch, and almost every dinner meal we make has some sort of dairy in it.  Any ideas?

Here is a link to a post that GraceKellysmom so graciously posted. I think you'll find it extremely helpful. I know I have.

Since I have a soy problem, I substituted enriched rice milk for cereal and baking/cooking. A lot of good cereals are dairy-free.

We ate really healthy while on the mspi diet. A lot of lean meats, veggies, fruits, homemade bread. The pounds rolled off without much effort. I got good at finding substitutes for most of the things I loved. Hopefully my other post linked above can help.

Just wanted to add......if you cut out dairy make sure you're not only replacing your calcium intake but also your fat intake. Most people get their daily fat through dairy. Your lo needs a small layer of fat to coat their intestines or it can cause blood in their stools. Our Ped. GI suggested red meats actually for protein and fat but you can also get healthier fats by cooking with Olive Oil or Canola Oil. Good luck.

Thank you everyone for your ideas, i really couldn't think of anything.  Now i have to get the courage to do it.  Seriously, this will be very VERY hard!  Basically I am just going to start by cutting back and seeing if that helps.  I sure like the idea of it helping me lose weight though!  I need a healthier life style!

It seems hard at first, but it's a fantastic way to eat, really.  Emilio has pasta with olive oil and kosher or sea salt.  Fantastic! He loves it, me too.

You do have to cook a lot.  But truth be told, it's a healthier diet when you're cooking as much as possible at home.
