14 month old wants out of room/night wakings
« on: December 16, 2005, 12:06:17 pm »
My ds is 14 months old and that past couple of months have been exhausting!  We started with really early wakings (4:15) and now he's getting up at night.  He gets ups crying hysterically and as soon as I go into his room he points to the door and wants out of his room.   The other night it was around midnight and it took two hours to get him back to sleep.  This morning it was 4:40 and I didn't fight with him, we got up.  He's ready for a nap now and it's 7:00 a.m.!!

He does fall asleep on his own although right now I'm in the room.  His reflux was really bad a couple of weeks ago so I was having to keep him upright to put him to sleep...it's better now so we're working towards me leaving the room.

Anyone else experience their little one badly wanting to leave his/her room?
Thanks!!

Have you got a little light in there?DD became scared of the dark around that age, also I think they must go through a growth spurt as well,so may want to give a cracker or something about 20 mins before last milk.
COuld also be overtired.Does your lo go to bed defore 7.30pm?If not I would try a 6.30pm bedtime and I'm 90% sure that will help with the early wakings.
For example Emily usually goes to bed at 6.30pm and wakes at about 6.30-7am.Last night she went at 7pm and was up at 5am
What's your schedule like?

Alison, I Am right there with you. We aren't having fun evenings anymore either. Hopefully you will end up having better luck. My daughter wakes up at least once a night. She used to just wimper but will now all out scream and at times wake up early too. Today we got up at 5a. Not pretty. Let me know if you need support. It can really be stressful at times. I still haven't figured out what is going on.

Thanks for the replies.  It's nice to know I'm not alone!  Every day is different with my son.  Because he wakes up so early (today was 5:10), he still takes two naps of about 45-85 minutes each.  He is usually asleep by 7:30.   Should I try to push that closer to 7:00?

It's funny how many people (mainly my family) think putting him to bed later will make a difference...how wrong they are!  We had an anniversary party last weekend and my ds only went to bed at 8:30!  I'll spare you the details, but the night wasn't pretty.   I'm dreading the holiday weekend because of him staying up later.

He gets a snack right before his bath so I don't think he's waking up because he's hungry.  Every night I go to bed holding my breath hoping that he sleeps through until at least 4:30!  How sad is that?

Any other thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

I would definately try to get nearer 6.30-7pm.I know from experience.
Also, don't know if it will make a difference, but i found out a few months ago that putting Emily in the bath in the evening (5ish),actually woke her up more.We now have baths in the morning. As we're up about 6.30am it's not much of a problem getting up and out.
She went to bed at 6.50pm last night and woke at 6am
I know that if I miss her 6.30pm bedtime, everything goes out of the window.
Good louck.Keep us posted
