Wisdom teeth coming out this morning. Can I nurse tonight?
« on: December 16, 2005, 13:13:17 pm »
My pediatrician said to wait 24 hours.  The dentist said to wait out tonight's feed an resume tomorrow morning.  Kellymom.com says I can nurse as soon as I feel alert.  Surgery's at 8:30 am.  We nurse before bed at 7:00 or 7:30.  I'm having Versed and Fentanyl and probably won't take anything more than Tylenol with codeine after (stronger drugs make me sick).  What have other people done after surgeries?  I'm probably more worked up about missing a feed than I am about the surgery itself.

I haven't had surgery since breastfeeding, but I personally would go with the Kellymom advice.  Also, you might be surprised that the pain isn't as bad as you're expecting!  :D I used Advil and icepacks for my wisdom teeth (4 - 3 of which were impacted, I think), and it was fine.  The first day or 2 are the most uncomfortable - and Lilah is at a good age to tolerate most forms of pain meds used for this sort of stuff - at least the very little that will filter down to her....  Good luck with the surgery and try not to stress about the breastfeeding afterwards!

I nursed Max about 3 hrs after my d&c. I woke up from the anesthesia, went to recovery for an hour, went home and nursed. My l/c said that as soon as I was out of recovery, the meds were mostly gone from my bloodstream/milk, and it would be fine.

The other thing you can consider is her age. If she was an infant, you may feel differently. I think nursing that night should be fine.

Thanks, ladies.  Now, if that right socket would stop bleeding, I could stop worrying altogether...

Aww, thanks, ladies!  I'm doing better.  Still in a little pain, but it seems I can now manage it with OTC meds rather than my Darvocet (which is good, since I have to; I'm alone at home with Lilah now).  Still can't eat much.  But I think I'm turning the corner.

sorry i missed this one when i actually could have been of help.  when i had to have general anasthetic (SP?) when Ethan was 1 day shy of 7 months i was told (according to la leche bible which i brought with me- thanks lll leader!) that having a general, the precautions are you can bf as long as you are safe to hold the baby.
hope you are feeling better soon! wisdoms out is not much fun!
