allergies !!!!!
« on: December 19, 2005, 10:49:26 am »
hi.
is it possible to become allergic to something you may have tolerated before ? does this make sense ?
ds has always eaten custard,he loves the stuff and would eat a full size pot of custard in one sitting and sometimes ask for more.we had no problems.we then introduced him to yoghurts as he seemed to only eat custard.so for months he didn't have any custard.
anyway a few months back ryan was unwell,we took him to the dr's and she said he had a sore throat and a viral infection, because he was unwell and off his food he didn't want his yoghurt so we offered him custard,he ate the whole pot.the next day he had a faint rash on his back and chest, i took him back to the dr's and she said this was the viral infection not to worry.she started him on antibiotics to help him out.within a week he was back to himself, and back to yoghurts he didn't want custard.
last tuesday ryan woke after an hour in bed boiling hot and crying,we gave him calpol (parecetomol) and he had a bad night.took him to the dr's in the morning and again he had a viral infection, sore throat and ulcers on his tongue(they always say viral infection)ds is prone to tonsilitis thought he might need antibiotics but dr wanted him to fight it off himself to boost his immune system!so again he went off his food but he ate a pot of custard on thursday, that evening i bathed him and noticed a slight rash but thought this was down to the infection.friday he had another pot of custard and he was so irratible all day i put him in the bath to cheer him up and noticed his rash was now everywhere and quite dark.he cam out the bath and was playing quite happily but i was concerned so i took him to the out of hours dr's and she was also concerned as they had 6 cases of meningitis this week.she checked his neck for stiffness ,he was fine, shone a light in his eyes,he didn't mind and a few other things.she didn't know what the rash was but started him on antibiotics.the rash has faded and he has purked up a bit.
it seems that on both occasions yes he has been unwell but he has also had custard.do you think he could have become intolerant to it ?
dh wants me to try custard again when he is well to see if the rash comes but i don't think it's fair because i don't know what else ds was feeling if he wasn't tolerating it.
sorry this is soo long but is it possible after a while of no problems with a food to not tolerate it ?

Nadia,
I agree with your DH - try again when everything has cooled down and he is well again.

I guess I would try it when he is well too but it doesn't sound like an intolerance to me. It sounds like he is getting some sort of skin allergy. Keep a diary and the next time it happens call your dr. again with all the dated info. That way they will have more to work with. Good luck.

he does have mild eczema, slightly rough on cheeks and legs but he has this all the time.because of his reflux he is so fussy with foods so his diet hasnt changed at all.the only thing is the custard but like i said he has had this before in pot loads with no problems.
maybe the rash was purely down to his viral infection.i know dr's have to be precaucious but the word meningitis did scare  me!!!!!

The only way you'll know for sure is to try the custard again. I would wait for aout 2 weeks after he is well again and try it. It may seem cruel but if he is building up sensitivities to foods then is't better to suss that out sooner rather than later.

My personal opinion though is that it probably is a virus. There's one going around here at the moment called fifth disease "slap cheek virus" which is rife in all the schools and nurseries.

Yeah my DD has a rash every time she gets poorly, also mouth ulcers. It does sound like a viral infection..  I think custard is mainly sugar and milk, does he seem sensitive to these in other foods?

Keep an eye on his skin but also his stools for mucous or blood. Mums gut instinct is pretty good so if you're still not convinced of a virus then ask your doc to do a stool sample test for blood (tiny amounts often cannot been seen unless tested). This may identify something if there is an issue with dairy.

i did agree with the fact he had a viral infection because he was preety bad but it was just the rash i was unsure about.i didn't know if it was the custard that had caused it on both occasions as he has been unwell afew days before the rash developed and after eating custard.
