Husband ready to cry it out...help!
« on: December 21, 2005, 16:38:44 pm »
How to start....my son, Spencer, 6 months has recently regressed.  Two weeks ago he started waking up (wide awake, that is) at four or five in the morning...we called it having a party.  We were able after a few nights to shush him to sleep in his crib.  Now, after his feeding at 12 or 1, he has been wide awake again!  Two nights ago, I gave in after 1 1/2 hours and put him in bed with me.  Last night, he slept in his crib but I had to get up to feed him twice and comfort him almost every hour.  He uses a pacifier and we are still swaddling him because he thrashes about with his arms and doesn't allow himself to sleep.  I know we need to break him of both of those things...how to start?  My dear husband keeps hearing of the merits of crying it out from his co-workers but that idea leaves me feeling sick to my stomach.

So, here are my questions (excuse me for being long winded) I hope someone can help.  What are the best ways to teach him to sleep unswaddled?  When should I pu/pd?  He doesn't fall asleep on the breast, so that's not our issue.  It's just him getting himself settled when he wakes in the middle of the night.  Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I think you are wise not to want to do CIO... I will get back to you with some help, just don't have time at the moment.

The reason your ds needs to sleep in your arms is "you have taught him that... we need to help you change that & it WILL involve crying... but crying with you there to guide....not alone like CIO

Just re your dh & CIO... next time he "wants your help" maybe ignore or ask how he would feel if he really needed your help & you ignored him... reading a road map or something like that is a good one... then he can kind of see the link if you say "well don't you think that is how ds would feel"

Well, we're back after visiting family for the holidays and things are very out of sync.  :(  Last night he woke for a dream feed at 10.  Then woke for a feeding at 2:30.  I fed him, until he was drowsy, put him down and then left the room.  Fifteen minutes later he was up screaming at the top of his lungs.  We dealt with this for two hours.  I tried pu/pd, patting/shushing him in his crib, soothing words, soft music and side sleeping.  Patting and sushing weren't enough to calm him down from his screams.  I had to rock him sometimes in my arms and or the rocker to calm him down.  Then I'd put him down...fifteen min later....same thing.  He did just get his first teeth...and we were way off schedule during the holidays...but still, I don't know what to do when he wakes like this.  I finally fed him after we had been at this for two hours and then he went to sleep 1/2 hour after that.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  I'm starting to doubt my mothering capabilities.  I realize that's being dramatic but things don't seem to be getting better.

Thanks all of you mommies out there!
