What do you do, am I doing it okay?
« on: December 22, 2005, 20:00:58 pm »
For all of my lo's (11wo) bedtimes (naps or nighttime) I walk around her room turning off lights, quietly telling her it is time to go to bed, swaddle her in swaddle bag, put a blanket over her, kiss her and tell her goodnight. Sometimes she may cry a little bit (a few minutes) sometimes she doesn't make a peep but is wide awake. Is this crying something I should stop? Am I harming her? I would not let her cry longer than 5 minutes, but she has always went to sleep this way. It just seems to have always worked. Is this crying it out or is it normal? How do any of you put your baby's to bed?

if oit is not escalating like a "help me" cry (where she needs reassurance or some intervention or is overtired) then i think it sounds like she is settling herself which is great and will reduce over time and can become just a few murmurs and whinges as part of settling into sleep.

I agree with Debra.  As long as it is not a real help me cry and just more fussing and what Tracy called mantra crying, I think it is totally normal.  For some babies this is just part of their way of letting off steam and settling into sleep.  For some lo's they grow out of it, like my dd did.  Some don't, like my nephew who to this day will still cry for about 3-5 minutes before going to bed/nap and he is 20 months old!

HTH and congrats on doing a great job!
